First and foremost, I received a paperback copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The After House is what I would call a supernatural mystery/ghost story. It tells the story of Remy Galway and her daughter Olivia. Remy and Olivia move into a quaint little home in Long Island, but what they don't know is the house has a bit of a past. One of the first owners still lurks inside, and he's not exactly thrilled to have new tenants in his home.

Eli Gaspar was one of the most respected whaling captains of Long Island back in the late 1800's. The only person who didn't approve of his lifestyle was his wife. Ignoring Sarah's pleas to stay home with her, Eli continues with his sea-faring ways until one fateful day.


When Remy's past creeps up on her, along with the past of the house, things get a whole lot worse. Will she and Olivia survive The After House? You'll have to read it and find out.

For me, personally, I felt the book had a decent premise that was executed well enough, but I also wish there had been a bit more ghost story and a little less romance. I was expecting something scarier, but it wasn't entirely disappointing.

I thought Eli was a well-written character with his back story intermingling with the present time. Remy was a bit frustrating at times. Of course, with the way her back story was introduced, and the way her parents were written, it wasn't exactly surprising that she acted the way she did throughout the book. Olivia, her daughter, didn't have a huge role in the story, but she was also a decent enough character.

Plot-wise, I felt it could have been fleshed out just a little more. It moved along at a nice pace, and I was never really bored with it. I just wanted something spooky and haunting. The After House just barely missed the mark there, at least for me.

Overall, I'd rate The After House 3.5 stars. If you're looking for a quick, easy read, pick up a copy of the book today.
