My Review

Monsterland is one of the newest books by Michael Phillip Cash. The cover is what drew me in and made me want to read the book, as well as the synopsis. It sort of reminded me of Jurassic Park, but with monsters instead of dinosaurs. Needless to say, as a fan of Jurassic Park (and horror), I was intrigued.

Monsterland tells the story of a world gone to hell in a handbasket. People are diseased and turning into zombies. The economy is in ruins. Vampires and werewolves exist, but tend to keep to themselves. That is, until one man - Vincent Conrad - decides to change all of that.

Deciding the best way to rebuild the economy, and protect the people of the world from the zombies, werewolves, and vampires, is to create a theme park, Vincent goes about capturing the monsters so he can put them on display.

Enter Wyatt and his friends. Wyatt, his brother Josh, and their friends, through sheer dumb luck, it seems, are granted backstage passes to Monsterland. They're eager and excited about visiting the new park and seeing all the monsters, but Wyatt and Josh's step-dad, Carter, isn't so keen on them being there. However, he has to be part of the president's security detail and ends up letting his stepsons go to Monsterland with their friends. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Monsterland is a fun, campy, B-movie type of horror novel. The plot is silly and entertaining, the characters are like-able enough, and the setting is definitely a place you won't forget.

The only issue I had was that the story seemed a smidge rushed, especially at the end. While I quite liked everything that was happening, I felt like it could have slowed down a bit and been fleshed out a bit more. Other than that, though, I had no qualms with the book.

Overall, I'd rate Monsterland 4 stars. If you like your horror a little on the tame side, definitely give Monsterland a go.
