Nothing had happened between her and Caleb, so why was she so unsettled? She ran from him at the Dog House. Touching him had upset her so much that she ran away to gain her composure. And wasn’t that ridiculous? Running away from things was cowardly, and at the risk of bragging on herself, she wasn’t a coward. So… what was going on here?
Nothing, yet everything. Denying her attraction to Caleb would be stupid. She had liked his looks from the first time she saw him, and the longer they worked together the better she liked him. Hot blood rushed to her face. Was she falling for him?
She picked up a rock and slung it into the river. Falling for Caleb wasn’t an option. No matter how much she liked him, it wouldn’t work between them. They came from different worlds, and while she could accept his world, she doubted he’d ever be welcome in hers. That alone put a significant barrier between them, but there was more.
He had no education to speak of which meant that he was unlikely ever to hold a high paying job. Not that that was the most important thing in the world, but men were so proud that she doubted he’d want a relationship with a woman who brought home the bacon.
And there was his prison record. She had tried to tell herself it didn’t matter, and in most ways it didn’t, but if he had stolen once, would he do it again?

Elaine Cantrell was born and raised in South Carolina where she obtained a master’s degree in personnel services from Clemson University. She is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary society for women educators and Romance Writers of America. Her first novel, A New Leaf, was the 2003 winner of the Timeless Love Contest. When she’s not writing or teaching, she enjoys movies, quilting, reading, and collecting vintage Christmas ornaments.
