A broken man, a dying woman, and a friendship that changes them both.
Franco Allessi is a broken, lonely man who wants nothing more than to outrun the ghosts of his past. For years, he tries to numb the pain of his wife's death with cheap beer and whiskey. When he's convicted of drunk driving, the judge revokes his license for six months and orders him to serve fifty hours of community service. Franco chooses Savannah Falls Hospice for no reason other than it's walking distance from his dilapidated house trailer.
On his first day on the job, he meets Aubrey Brewer, a woman whose time on earth is quickly ticking to a stop. Their unusual connection teaches powerful, life-changing lessons about friendship, acceptance, and the importance of appreciating that precious treasure called Life.
Loree Lough is an exceptional author, and that's why I approached her about writing the novel for my Feature film, 50 Hours. But I had no idea how wonderful her novelization would be until I read it. Loree was able to dig so deep into my characters. She unearthed and richly developed the film’s skeletal characters and give them three dimensional lives. I am so happy with the book!
- Kevin O’Neill, writer/director/actor/producer

Excerpt
Franco with Aubrey's controlling mother, Agnes...
It felt good, watching Aubrey interact
with students she hadn’t seen in months . . . some from this year’s class,
others from past semesters.
He tensed when her mother joined them.
“I can’t believe my eyes,” Agnes said. “Why, she’s positively glowing.”
Reaching around the principal and Franco, she squeezed Mrs. Kane’s forearm.
“Thank you. Thank you so much. I haven’t seen her this happy since . . . since
before the diagnosis.”
The director patted Agnes’s hand. “Don’t
thank me, dear. This was entirely Franco’s doing.” Facing the principal, she
added, “Would you like to help me poke some candles into that cake?”
The women left him alone with Agnes, and
as Franco tried to think of a logical reason to escape, she said, “You did
all this?”
“Well, I came up with the original idea
. . . ” He braced himself for a good old-fashioned southern gentlewoman
scolding.
“But . . . why?”
Should he tell her the truth, or make
something up and hotfoot it out of there? Franco thought of a great line from
an old Jack Nicholson movie: “You can’t handle the truth.”
“I’ll tell you why I did it. I did it
because my greatest regret since my wife’s death is that I never got to say
goodbye.” He ignored her surprised expression and glanced at Aubrey, laughing
and smiling. “I figured I could spare her feeling that way, at least about
those kids.” He gave a quick, one-shouldered shrug. “She deserves this. That’s
why I did it.”
Agnes’ cheeks flushed as she pressed a
palm to her chest. She wouldn’t be a half-bad-looking woman, Franco
thought, if she smiled more often.
“I . . . I don’t know what to say, Mr.
Allessi.”
“There’s nothing to say, except
‘Happy early birthday, Aubrey.’ Or ‘Happy late birthday.’ And please. Call me
Franco.”
He walked up to the cake table, helped
himself to two squares—one for Amos, one for himself—and left the solarium.
There’d be time, later, to see how Aubrey enjoyed the party.
He hoped.

DREAM CAST
If I could choose--and hire actors for a 50
Hours feature film, I'd choose Christian Slater as Franco, and Cate
Blanchet as Aubrey. Are there trained bluejays out there? I hope so, because
Gilbert (a.k.a Bobbit) needs to be part of the story!
