Chocolatier’s Ghost, 2

William was not overly worried.  This was not the first time they'd had a left-over crate, a quick look at the manifests would find something not checked off.  He crossed over to it, looking for a mark on the rough-hewn wood.  "Not something well regarded," he muttered, bending over to inspect the side closer, certain that there must be some mark.  Nothing would have entered the warehouse without some sort of marking on it, from a ship, from a merchant, something.  The crate was of poor quality. As he leaned close and breathed deeply,  he caught, much to his dismay, the undertone of death.

"Oh, dear,"  he whispered.  "Mr. Boyd, the bar, if you please?"  He held out his hand, unable to stop looking at the crate.  He grasped the cold metal as it touched his palm and looked for the first nail.

"I have a light, sir," Boyd said, raising it high as William pried the crate’s lid open.  It wasn't hard, only a hand full of nails, poorly hammered in, secured the lid.

The woman had not been lovely in life, she had been too fretful, too scattered. Tasmin had called her a handful of leaves on the wind, and it had suited the former Wise Woman.

 They had been gentle, whomever they were; had laid her on leaves and straw covered by a tattered old blanket, crossed her hands over her chest.  Death made Cherise pretty, for her features were smoothed out, quiet.  Her hair was neatly braided.  He would have rathered the leaves on the wind, the fretful, forgetful absentmindedness of life.
