They drifted beneath a star studded sky, the
night air so clear that the stars were reflected in the water. Not a trace remained of the Isle of
Avilion or its shroud of mist.
Violet looked out at the dark waters where their frail craft drifted without direction. How long could they stay out here? The craft was a construction of knotted and woven reeds and, as with many things in Avilion, its strength was in the magic that had created it; the magic that no longer existed.
Something bumped against the back of the barge and Ryan was immediately alert.
“What the…”
He released his hold on her and moved carefully to the stern. The craft tipped precariously. Violet shivered and wondered how long either of them would survive in the cold water.
Ryan turned his head toward her. “Do you want to see?”
“What is it?”
“It’s the last breath of magic,” he said. “I think it’s come to help us.”
Violet reluctantly shed the blanket and moved back until she could look down into the water. She peered cautiously over the side of the boat. She could make out a dark shape on the surface of the water and an eye that reflected the starlight.
“What is it?”
“It’s one the creatures that were set to guard the lake,” Ryan said. “I saw one this morning.”
Violet reached out to touch the silvery skin and searched the back of her mind to find the faint thread of the creature’s thoughts.
Go now?
It was a question. The creature needed permission to leave. Why had it stayed? Why had it not been taken into the mist? These questions could not be answered by the simple mind she had found. She stretched her mind and pushed through the barrier that lay between her thoughts and the mind that was directing the creature. There it was; a soul clinging desperately to the last shreds of its humanity. Merlin!
Did you send this creature?
It is all I have to give.
We need more. We need the Great Magic.
It will come.
When?
Nothing. No answer. He was no longer in her thoughts, but the creature remained. She felt its anxious impatient question.
Push?
She hesitated. They drifted now without purpose but if the creature set the craft in motion, would it stay in motion? It was worth a try.
Yes, push.
The creature thrust its long snout against the stern of the barge. They began to move. She felt the creature’s mind humming in satisfaction.
I go now.
Before she could bid the creature farewell Ryan was pulling at her arm and pointing toward lights that flared among the shadowy mountains that encircled the lake.
“Beacons,” Ryan said. “Dristan is calling his army.”
Violet watched as the beacons sent flames and sparks into the clear frosty air. She imagined the message of the flames passing from one mountain to another until it was carried to the farthest reaches of Albion; to places where hope had died.
