GETTING TO KNOW AND LOVE YOUR FRIENDLY, NEIGHBORHOOD BART…
It’s what you you’ve always wanted, but never knew you wanted … random facts about yours truly. Up close, with plenty of crazy…
Name: Bart Hopkins
Nicknames: Bartimmus, B-Ho (like J-Lo)
Pet Peeves: Slow driving in the left lane, but I also despise tailgating. I hate dirty dishes and I can’t stand to leave any in my sink at night. Mondays suck, but that’s nobody’s fault. I’m both thoroughly amused and annoyed by people that shout at the movie screen at the theater. I hate restroom door handles that you have to pull from inside to leave … you’re forced to touch them when not everyone washes their hands. And wet handles even from washed hands are gross. Seems like it would be easy enough to make them all push to exit.  Paper towels nearby with a trash can are an acceptable alternative. Which also leads to probably the worst thing I can think of … people that don’t wash their hands after they use the restroom. I think I threw up in my mouth a little just typing it.
If I knew I would die tomorrow, how would I spend my last day?  This is one of those questions you can make a lot of good jokes about. We can all guess what the hormone-soaked young man might do. Or the pyromaniac. Or the priest. But, what would I, me, the average Joe, do?
It’s probably going to bore the pants off of you, but I think I would just want to be with my family and hug my kids all day. In a rare moment of complete and utter seriousness … I never have, nor ever will, produce anything I am prouder of than my kids.
Favorite book character?  Roland Deschain, the gunslinger. This almost overlaps into the hero realm. Roland symbolizes good in King’s Dark Tower series. I always wanted to be a little like him. Driven by honor and a personal code even though we all have imperfections, and so does Roland.
A day in the life…  Wake up, make breakfast, and pack lunches for three kids and my schoolteacher wife. Laundry. Cleaning. Writing. Pick up the kids. Drive them to band, gymnastics, etc. Make dinner for my beautiful family. Finish most days pleasantly exhausted. I am always in need of another hour of sleep. Always.
Me in five words: Funny. Happy. Anxious. Tired. Observing.
First book I read, the one that started it all: The Voice of the Night by Brian Coffey. Brian Coffey was Dean Koontz’s pseudonym, but back in 1980-1981, I didn’t know the meaning of pseudonym. It was a creepy, thrilling, and dark book. It scared the heck out of me. I think The Shining might have been the next book I read. I was six, maybe seven.
Favorite foods: Mexican and BBQ, which is probably, subconsciously, why we moved to the Austin area.
Relaxation: When I need to kick back and unwind I usually watch a movie or read a book on weeknights. On the weekend, we’re an adventurous family, and you can find us all over Austin, rock climbing, playing laser tag, hitting the aquarium … we’re down with trying almost anything!
So, I guess that wasn’t so bad. Not too much crazy. Or at least I didn’t reveal much of the crazy. Just a morsel of the yumminess that is Bart.
Always keep a book nearby & Happy Reading!
