Dallas Anderson is stuck in a time loop that repeats Labor Day 2001 to September 11, 2001. He thinks he must prevent the terrorist attacks to break the loop. A Minute and 30 Seconds on Writing Historical Fiction
The amount of research required for historical novels is massive! That’s if you want to do it right. Even if you lived during the era about which you’re writing, you still have to put in the work to accurately capture the not-so-distant history. Take Stephen King’s11/22/63 for instance. Besides it being one of my favorites, and one I’ve read three times (I’m not kidding), it is wonderfully and expertly written. King discussed his research in the author notes: getting Oswald right, his wife’s pretty face but bad teeth, his relationship with George de Mohrenshildt, when he travelled from Russia to Fort Worth, the ratty apartment he tried to make a home with his wife and baby. Getting those things right added real life to the story.
In my novel, THE DARKEST LOOP, I had thoroughly researched Labor Day, 2001 through 9/11/01. I had to go back and see who played Monday Night Football on September 10th. I had to confirm who the Yankees played against during the week leading up to 9/11 and where they played: home or away. I had to go back in time to see what journalists covered the attacks and on which television network. Sure, I could’ve just wrote what I thought I remembered but I would’ve gotten it wrong. My first draft is proof of that. While a writer may use a bit of license, it’s best to capture the era in question in accurate essence.
