Chapter 1

As I entered the commons area, my heart pounded so fast, I thought it might pop out of my chest. Most of the Maui Island couples were gathered. Some couples were hugging and kissing, others appeared to be in intimate conversations. The girls from my island had all made it down—only one guy, not mine or Cali’s beau. Melody and Cali sat next to each other on a couch. Cali bit her nails, and we exchanged an “are you ready” stare. Melody’s complexion was pale, her face strained like she might hurl any second. Sophie, who was always so confident, shoulders were slouched—just as nervous as I felt, she sat in a plush chair across the room. She flipped her hair, then began twirling a piece with her finger. I eased my way over to Cali, but was too on edge to sit.
Zimmerman, the camera crew, and a few bureaucrats were scattered around the vast area. The cameras were rolling, taking in everyone’s reactions. Zimmerman buzzed with anticipation—a huge grin was sewn on his face while he chatted with his team. What a burro! Tension loomed through the air. The rest of us were on tenterhooks, yet, Zimmerman couldn’t be more delighted to witness how our reunions would go down.
Roman and Becca were speaking in hushed voices. They both wore love-struck expressions, along with a discombobulation of other emotions. Becca’s brow was furrowed and Roman scrunched his nose. He leaned closer, whispering in her ear. Whatever he said made Becca flinch. Her eyes widened, full of distress.
Zimmerman chuckled, amused by their exchange. That man was such a tool. Roman glanced around—his forehead wrinkled more. He took Becca’s hand, towing her to the outside deck.
Zimmerman signaled for one of the cameramen. “Follow them.”
The guy sprang into action, moving quickly behind them. This journey had barely started, and they were already hoping for drama.
Sophie’s exhalation drew my attention. Thomas stood in the entryway—very tall, buff, and a red-head. He was handsomer in person. I never thought that color hair could work for a man, but it looked good on him. His features were masculine and well defined. It was strange watching Sophie act timid—she was anything but. Clearly, she feared his reaction. Thomas’ expression was a mixture of longing and uncertainty. He didn’t debate long, however. He strode over to Sophie, then embraced her tightly. She hung on to him for dear life. Another cameraman approached them, not wanting to miss a beat.
Cali sighed loudly—I mirrored how she felt. With each moment that passed, my anxiety heightened. Finally, I was put out of my misery. I sensed him before I saw him. My head shot toward the entrance. Tobias and Cade stood in the threshold. My breathing ceased as Tobias’ chocolate browns seared me. Yeah, I still loved him. No question there. To my shock, Tobias closed the distance between us quickly. He lifted me off the ground, hugging me fiercely. My worries were put on the back burner for a spell.
