My Review
Nocturne is the first book in the Fourth Talisman series.While it
technically stands alone from the Fourth Element trilogy, I would
suggest reading those books as well, just to have a more firm
understanding of the characters and the world they live in.
I went into Nocturne blind. I hadn't read any of the other books by Kat Ross, but Nocturne sounded intriguing enough, so I figured I'd give it a whirl. Plus, that cover is gorgeous.
Nocturne follows Nazafareen, a mortal girl who has a special ability. She can break magic, even though she has none of her own to use. Unfortunately for her, though, her ability has caused some serious damage. Not only can she not remember anything that happened, but she's now living in Nocturne, where it's always dark and three moons shine down.
Nazafareen only has one person who seems to like her. Everyone else mostly tolerates her. Her friend, Darius, tries to keep her safe and away from anything (or anyone) that might harm her or set her off (also harmful), but Nazafareen is desperate to get answers and doesn't always want Darius acting like some sort of helicopter parent.
When an assassin comes for her in Nocturne, she knows it's time to leave. Refusing to tell Darius, Nazafareen sets off, hoping she can find someone to help her unravel the mysteries of her mind aka her erased memories.
Nazafareen's journey, though, does not go as planned, and she ends up stranded in a city where a mysterious figure known as The Oracle is leading the charge against magic users and people with magic abilities. Nazafareen must become someone else if she wants to stay safe and make it out of the city alive.
Nocturne is a really good story. Even though I hadn't previously read any of the other stories featuring these characters, I was immediately drawn in and curious to see how things would play out.
Let me tell you, this book is a whirlwind of emotions. Lots of drama, action, and even some romance. I thoroughly enjoyed following Nazafareen on her journey, and I knew I'd be rooting for her the entire way.
The characters are all really well-written. Like I said above, I really liked Nazafareen. She's a character you can't help but want to see good things happen to. I felt kinda bad for her at times. I also really liked Darius. He seemed like a good guy. The Oracle is an awful person, though. Definitely did not like.
Plot-wise, the book sucks you in and doesn't let go. I was eager to see how it would end, and I was not disappointed. I'm so looking forward to the next book in the series.
Overall, I'm giving Nocturne 4.5 stars. I can't wait for more!

Thanks so much for hosting me, Jasmine, I'm so glad you liked Nocturne! And I'm really happy to know you followed the story and characters without having read the first series, I worked hard to make it a fresh entry without too many spoilers (in case anyone wanted to go back and check out the others). Anyway, I love this review. The Oracle is definitely awful, lol and gets even worse :)
