An Immigrant Girl's Powerful Journey of Aspiration and Love in Early Twentieth Century New York
Pre World War One, Elsa came to America with her eyes wide open, realizing it was up to her to make a life for herself. Surviving a sweat shop in lower Manhattan, a chance job with a Long Island elite family opens up her world. Invited in up to a point, she unwittingly, albeit precariously, crosses the social divide with her now open heart, which puts all she had worked for in jeopardy.

My Top Ten World War
One Era Books:
Love of Finished Years is set in the years leading up to the
First World War. This is a list of my ten favorite books about World War One.
The first seven are novels and the final three are history books.
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
The quintessential
World War One novel, this is the story of a young German in the trenches, who
quickly loses his excitement for battle and struggles to hold onto his humanity
as the war drags on.
A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
Hemingway draws
on his experience as a volunteer in Italy during the war to tell this gripping
wartime love story.
A Very Long Engagement by Sébastien Japrisot
A French girl
searches for her fiancé after the war, not believing he is really dead. I’m
always a sucker for a good love story!
Fall of Giants by Ken Follett
A sweeping epic that tells stories of families in different
countries across the theatre of the war, as all intertwine in Europe’s great
tragedy.
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
An Englishman’s
pre-war affair in France leads him to the dark world tunneling beneath the
trenches of the front.
August, 1914 by Aleksandr
Solzhenitsyn
Primarily a narrative based in the Russian defeat in East
Prussia, which in many ways paved the way for the Russian revolution.
Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo
A soldier loses
all his limbs in an explosion. This is the story of a man reflecting on the war
and his life, while feeling trapped inside his body. This was a powerful anti-war
statement novel.
The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman
By far the most famous written history of World War One,
this book tells the story of the lead up to the war, and the first month of the
war as it played out on the western front. Though it is a history book, The
Guns of August reads like a novel, it is so compelling.
A World Undone by G. J. Meyer
This is my favorite comprehensive history of World War One,
chronologically detailing all the major events of the four-year debacle. It
also gives compelling background into the families, politics and technologies
that played such a major role in the conflict.
The Sleepwalkers by Christopher Clark
Another book that delves into the lead-up and beginning of
the war—in more detail than Tuchman’s book. It is a subject that has baffled
the world with the benefit of hindsight.
