“Princess, might I have a word?” a deep voice startled her out of her thoughts.
“Prince Darcy!” she squeaked, jumping to her feet. “Of course.”
“Shall we take a walk? I understand you have only seen this room of the Chateau.
I’d like to give you a tour,” he said, holding his hand out to her.

Hesitantly she reached out her own hand and nodded. Ever since Gala shared some of her
experiences in the Chateau’s training rooms, Orla had been curious. Actually, she had been dying to
know more. While Gala had not gone into details, she had spoken of the feelings evoked by some
of her sessions. Orla longed to experience such feelings of freedom, power, and something
indescribable. During the past few weeks, she had witnessed the beauty of a woman kneeling
before a man, the protective gentleness in the eyes of a dominant, and the glow of pride when
a dominant praised his submissive. Orla felt a tingle deep within her body and had to admit that
she longed for such feelings as well.

“People pay handsomely for the privilege of coming here to learn. The tuition then pays for the training
of warriors who are in resistance to Queen Ena. They wish to overthrow her and place me back on
the throne,” Orla said quietly.

you must yourself request it. We do not force anyone here. We abide by the dictums of Safe, Sane,
and Consensual.”

Orla stopped walking and turned to face Darcy. “I understand and greatly respect you for following
those dictums. Over the past few years, I have had no choice in what I wear, what I eat, when I speak,
what I do, not even when I sleep. I’m ready for freedom of choice. My father also taught me that
freedom is possible only when everyone agrees to follow certain guidelines. I don’t know if I’m ready
to consent to this training yet, but let’s finish the tour and then I’ll decide.”

to determine their overall fitness. “No one is excluded because of a physical difficulty,” he explained,
“but it is essential that a primary be intimately familiar with any limitations. For example, if an applicant
has respiratory difficulties, then the primary knows never to engage in breath play and to be very,
very cautious about gags.”

The Power to Rule

I often write of royalty, as displayed in my Kings & Queens contribution ‘The Man
with the Kind Eyes.’ Yet, even in a story where a royal title is thrust upon
the most desirable candidate, a title of king or queen is one that strikes a
call of warning.
Whether writing about King Ana’horaura – a most gentle and
sensual king – in my upcoming release Restive,
or about King Horace – who is ruthless for the sake of being ruthless – from
‘To Adventure’ in Enchanted Fairy Tales,
and even with Queen Bridgette in ‘The Man with the Kind Eyes,’ one constant
character trait flowed through them all. None of them were perfectly suited to
lead an entire people.
King Ana’horaura, with all of his wonderful qualities, lives
in a peaceful land and has never experienced violence or conflict, which means
he is ill prepared if such a thing should arrive. King Horace is as vile a man
as one could imagine. His lack of compassion and sensitivity could lead his
people to their own destruction, or it could lead them to overthrow his throne.
And Bridgette – my unlikely and most favorite of my royals… all she wanted to
do was free her people, and now she holds an immense amount of power that seems
to be spiraling out of control.
This spiral, you see, is caused by everybody behind the
scenes. It brings with it confusion and detachment from one’s place, and it allows
authoritative decisions to be made so swiftly that one often doesn’t realize it
is happening. Manipulation – whether for good or bad – is the strongest hand of
politics.
Let’s say I somehow became King of a nation. Or, if the
crown is more attractive, Queen of a nation. I’m not picky. How would I decide
what to build laws against and which laws to tear down? It is an impossible
task to please all people, any of the time. When I cater to one group, another
group will cry out against the tyranny. The only way to have control would be
to have total authority. So many rules and laws and punishments and people who
are made examples of… there would be no quality of life for the citizens. There
would be no joy, no free will, and no excitement. Example: Those people don’t
like these books, and these people don’t like those books, so we just won’t
have books. That way, no one can gripe over someone else’s reading selection.
That, in my opinion, is no way to live.
Whereas I admire strong leaders who can rule over people
with their magical hand, I do not feel I could be such a ruler. It is a
daunting task and one that I would have to pass on to the people as I
relinquished my title.
I am too much of a rebel to ever truly follow or lead. History
has shown that the King’s or Queen’s beliefs in the past were the beliefs that
were expected of their people. I believe that if we were not meant to have
freedom of thought, choice and belief, we would not have the ability to conjure
those ideals. We are meant to be free-thinkers – intellectuals – to lead the
world to brighter futures. We are meant to aspire and to inspire. Having said
this – we have one chance assured in which to accomplish all of the brilliant,
wondrous things that we can do in this life. We are but a moment in time. Let
go of your inhibitions, your fears, and your self-doubts. Embrace your dreams,
trample over your obstacles, and grab your place in history. Everything that we
do, here and now, will dictate how we are remembered and respected in the
future. Never let anybody hold you back from an accomplishing goal that is
within your reach. Be your own King or Queen. Rule your life to your beliefs
and your goals, and be the person that you were always meant to be.
Putting all of that aside, I will gladly be a Prince
anytime. Or a Princess… if the crown is more attractive.
