Childhood Memory
I count myself very lucky to have had an extremely happy childhood.  My parents did their best to provide everything they could for my brother and myself.  Unfortunately I have the worst long term memory and even when I look at photographs of me as a child on holiday I can’t remember a thing about them.  You know the ones…where you have to stand by a local landmark and smile or point.
The only reason I know when and where they are is because Mum has very kindly written on the back of each one.  Still doesn’t help me remember anything, but at least I know how old I was and which part of the country I was in.
I do remember a few things though so let me share them with you…
I can remember hiding under my teacher’s desk in our first year at infant school, I even remember her name, Mrs. Jackson and give me the school class photo and I could tell you every single child’s name even though it was back in the early eighties.
There was a huge thunder and lightning storm and our classrooms didn’t have walls if I remember correctly.  They were just made up of large squares, some glass, some not, lol.  Don’t ask me what the other panels were made of, I haven’t got a clue.  We were all scared so we hid under desks, a few of us hiding under hers.  I don’t know why we did?  Don’t even know if we were allowed to?  But we did.
And of course there’s Christmas.  Always my favourite time of year.  I think I love it even more now than when I was a child.
Going to sleep, or trying to go to sleep on Christmas Eve, my Christmas sack at the bottom of my bed.  I would usually wake up about 3 am to find that Santa had been, drag my sack on to my parent’s bed only to be told to go back to sleep till later.  I never could go back to sleep.  Not once I knew Santa had been.  I’d try again every hour until, usually around 6 my brother and I would be allowed to open our presents.
We’d sit at the bottom of their bed ripping off the paper before heading downstairs for breakfast.  I would always have a new outfit for Christmas day and we would spend the day at my Nan and Grandad Kirk’s house next door.  All the family would come and we would sit on the arms of chairs or on the floor eating our Christmas dinner.
Boxing Day was always spent at my other Nan and Grandad’s house.  A much quieter affair as my Dad is an only child.  The kitchen table would be unfolded and the six of us would sit down for roast beef, apple pie and rice pudding.
When I think about it, maybe I do have a good memory after all.  I can’t remember a thing about where I’ve been on holiday as a child but I remember my grandparent’s faces, their smiles and their laughs and that’s the best memory ever.
