She came to the stairs, and memories of that horrible night
surfaced. Uncle Evan… Her throat tightened, and she swallowed.
“Get a grip,” she mumbled. She straightened her shoulders and
headed up the steps. She put one foot in front of the other, ignoring the
groans of rotting wood and the echoes of a moment she would rather forget.
Opening the door to the small apartment, she sucked in a sharp
breath. It was exactly how they had left it. Their sleeping bags were still
there, or what the moths had left of them. It was morbid. The carpet was the
same; she knew from the blood stains. She supposed the scents of death lingered
when you kept them boxed up.
“Oh, Ward,” she whispered. He had left it all here to gather dust.
She had run away from facing her truths, and Ward had locked himself out. What
a pair they were.
Shaking off the emotions, Casey let her practical side kick in.
The apartment would be adequate for her. She would gut the place first,
naturally, but it would work. She wouldn’t let the ghosts deter her.
