A Heart in the Right Place

All Nick wants to do is take his dying father for a perfect father-son weekend in the Scottish Highlands. It’s not much to ask, is it? A log cabin, a roaring fire, a bottle of fine whisky and two days to paper over the cracks in their relationship.
However, Nick didn’t plan on making the trip with a dead neighbour in the back of his car. Or the neighbour’s dog. He really didn’t plan on being pursued by a psychotic female assassin intent on collecting body parts. And he really, really didn’t plan on encountering a platoon of heavily armed mercenaries, or some very hungry boars, or a werewolf.
A Heart in the Right Place - a horror comedy about setting out with the very best intentions and then messing everything up.

My Review

A Heart in the Right Place was my first book by the authors, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the story. I do love horror, and I find dark humor amusing, so I'm glad I took a chance on the book.

The story is about a man named Nick who just wants to spend time with his dying father. He plans a trip so they can have some father-son bonding time together, but it all goes wrong the day of said trip when the expensive bottle of whiskey he'd ordered gets delivered to his neighbor instead.
Breaking into neighbor's house sets of a chain of events even the most enthusiastic fans of dark humor won't see coming.

A Heart in the Right Place is full of insanity. Like, seriously, when I first read the synopsis, I was like, hmm...this sounds a little strange. When I started reading it, I was like, okay, this is pretty graphic at times. And when I finished... well, I had to take a moment to step back from my Kindle and ask myself, "What the heck did I just read?"

I absolutely adored this book. 100% loved it so much. It's ridiculous. It's horrific. It played on my fears (seriously, werewolves are horrifying). It tickled my morbid sense of humor and made me snort many times. It was such a fun read.

Nick, the poor guy... I felt so bad for him throughout most of the book. His dad was an amusing character, though. I enjoyed their back-and-forth banter. And the woman following them (her name escapes me right now) is completely bonkers. She's...I don't even know. One billion percent off her rocker.

Also, that ending. I did not see that coming, but it entertained me and amused me. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this story, and I would definitely recommend it to fans of dark comedy, horror, and people with a dark/morbid sense of humor.

I'm rating A Heart in the Right Place 4.5 stars.
