Excerpt
2017 – On her return to Harbor Island, Tina takes
command of the family cruiser for the first time in years and remembers how
much she loves the sea.
She punched the
bottom right button, and the electric
winch whirred into action. The launching trolley which carried the one-ton vessel began a slow, effortless descent down
the slipway toward the waves. A rush of excitement coursed through her veins as
a glorious, sun-kissed day beckoned. When the stern drifted in the water, she
turned over the engine. Harbor Island
V came to life. Obeying her skillful touch, the cruiser
wheeled. She thrust it into forward, and the cruiser slipped through the
jewel-bright blue waves at a moderate pace.
She steered in
the general direction, checking with her depth-finder and GPS. Funny how after
all these years, the skills she’d learned from Uncle Dickie flooded back.
Reflecting on how much time she’d spent on her school vacations cruising around
the island with her uncle, she realized it had been Dickie who had unreservedly
nurtured her love for adventure. Unlike her parents whose anxiety stifled some
of her daring-do characteristics, Uncle Dickie had encouraged her to take
calculated risks and leap into life with gusto. In her uncle, she’d found a soul mate. No wonder the other men in her life
had fallen short. On some level, she probably had compared them to her
intelligent, resourceful and inspirational uncle. He’d been a hard act to
follow.
As her
confidence grew, she pushed forward on the throttle, increasing speed. Cruising
through the channel toward the reef, she inhaled a long breath. The smell of
salt tickled the tiny hairs in her nostrils as its taste seasoned her tongue.
Being on the water nourished her soul. She wished she’d visited Harbor Island
more often over the past years. Perhaps she would have handled life’s
challenges with more compassion if she had? One thing she knew for sure, being
on the water cleared her mind and liberated her emotions. Here she felt free
and alive.
