Dyed Souls

Described by John Lloyd of The Bookbag as "Catcher in the Cuckoo's Nest," Dyed Souls is a gritty coming-of-age literary novel, set in a residential treatment center in 1980’s California.
Charlie Lyle loves science, natural history, and the world of the mind, and it is his refuge and salvation as he copes with his drug-addicted mother and a world of circumstances well-beyond his grasp. More a work of philosophy than psychology, “For the teen it has a galling coming-of-age, redemption quest. For the adult it has that, as well as a literary look at a singular fictional life.”

Author Q&A

1. What is the first book that made you cry?
Moon Palace by Paul Auster. Absolutley heartbreaking ending. I ached for days afterwards.
2. How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?
This one took 35 years. Hoping the next will be shorter a bit than that.
3. How do you select the names of your characters?
Interesting question. I really don’t know. It’s more by feel than anything else.
4. What creature do you consider your "spirit animal" to be?
A Flounder. They lay on the bottom, look at all the drama above them and wonder, “what the fuck was that all about?”
5. What are your top 5 favorite movies?
The Beauty Inside (Korean film): Amazing film about a man who wakes up in a different body every day, and a woman who tries to love him, never knowing the body she’ll wake up next to
Lust, Caution (Chinese film): Brilliant Ang Lee film about the intersection of political ideology, biology and power
The Lobster :Too strange and wonderfully dark and disturbing to describe
6. If you were the last person on Earth, what would you do?
  Enjoy the quiet
7. What fictional character would you want to be friends with in real life?
Nathan Glass from Brooklyn Follies, though I doubt he’d have me.
8. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Do something more useful and pleasurable with your time. Life’s too short.
9. What book do you wish you had written?
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
10. Tell us 10 fun facts about yourself! :)
Can’t think of anything that wouldn’t come off as narcissitic prattle
