When Ashley Riveraine jumped at the
chance to travel back in time to meet her hero Alexander the Great, she never
thought she would end up staying there…
Following Alexander the Great’s army on
its journey across Persia, Ashley is walking the knife edge of history. As a
presumed goddess, Ashley is expected to bless crops, make sure battles are won
and somehow keep herself out of the history books.
Can Ashley avoid the wrath of the Time
Institute while keeping the man she loves alive?
Alexander the Great is on the most
difficult part of his campaign. He and Ashley cross the mountains chasing the
crown of Persia and seeking their son, Paul, kidnapped by Darius. In Balkh,
Alexander stops at the temple of Anahita to worship the goddess and is seduced
by Roxanne with the help of her father, the satrap of the area, who has
ambitions for himself and for his daughter.
The
next day the satrap, Oxyartes, came calling. The name ‘Oxyartes’ was the one
all satraps shared on this part of the river. It was an honorary title given to
the ones who guarded the river and worshipped the goddess. I would have liked
to kill him. However, mindful of the consequences, I did nothing. Well, almost
nothing. I asked Usse for a powerful laxative and put it in Oxyartes’ wine.
I
also asked Usse for something that would make me stop hurting and pointed to my
heart. He smiled sadly and said that if he had that philtre he would be the
world’s richest man. He did give me one of his magic cigarettes and I smoked
it. I think Alexander smoked one too, because his eyes were very red and he had
the stupidest grin all through the meeting. I sat by his feet, the good little
wife, and asked Oxyartes to have some more wine and waited for the axe to fall.
It fell. He said that Alexander had defiled his sweet, innocent daughter
Roxanne, and the girl was suicidal.
In
English, I said, ‘Sweet, innocent Roxanne is an oxymoron.’
Everyone
thought I was calling a blessing upon her and smiled happily. Except Alexander,
who knew that tone of voice.
We’d
had time to talk, though, and he cleared his throat. ‘I, Iskander Philip of
Macedonia, do formally ask the hand of Roxanne in marriage. I will come to
claim her after I recover the crown of Darius from the perfidious Bessus.’ This
was a clever move – if Oxyartes wanted his daughter to be queen he would help
Alexander against Bessus. He held all the land on this side of the Oxus, and
his protection would be invaluable.
Oxyartes
had obviously weighed the ‘fors’ and ‘againsts’ and he smiled an oily smile
that made me want to vomit. Instead I said, ‘A toast?’ and poured him more
wine. ‘I hope you shit your innards out, you creep,’ I said to him in English.
‘Thank
you for your blessing,’ he said.
Alexander
hid his face in his hands. He was getting a working knowledge of English.
