Alexander awoke in darkness inside a bronze statue, remembering how the green
of Scotland’s Culloden field had turned red with blood that day in
1746. Had he died before awakening nude and sightless in front of
strangers in present-day Raleigh, North Carolina? The mystery of how
was overshadowed by why. Told that another warrior awoke when a demon
threatened to take over the world, had a second demon escaped Hell?
When the demon appears and demands Gwen join him, Alex must use all
his new skills, weapons, and Heaven-sent powers to keep her and the
world safe.

A white horse with
dark splotches over its rump raised its head from the next stall while a large
brown horse neighed. Gwen ignored them. The sight above her was like a dream. A
terrible dream.
Sam, naked to the
waist, raised his sword and swung. When it connected with the blade in Alex’s
hand, the clang echoed through the barn. Again and again Sam swung his weapon
and Alex stopped every slash, as his muscles strained and sweat streaked down
his naked chest.
If Alex’s eyesight
was as poor as she suspected, he might get hurt, or killed.
Sam hesitated. Had
he heard her thoughts? Alex took advantage of the pause in their combat and stepped
back along a narrow beam. His head was slightly turned, suggesting his left eye
was still too swollen to help him.
“This is
ludicrous,” Gwen whispered. “Alex has one eye, and Sam is a learned warrior
over two-hundred years old. They are no match. And what if either misses a step?
Is our plan to slice the demon in two? There has to be a better way. I felt the
demon’s anger. They are wasting time.”
HenrĆ whispered so
as not to upset the warriors high above. “First and foremost, demons want out
of Hell. They yearn to roam the earthly plane, where human emotions turn them
into ferocious killers.”
“Emotions?”
“Oui. Desire, anger, and envy are what
they feed upon. However, happiness and joy make them ill. Since few methods can
kill a demon once freed, the guardians keep the gates under constant
surveillance. Alex awoke to fight a demon. Allow him to train.”
“Have faith,”
Kenzie whispered. “This training will help him survive.”
Gwen was
speechless. She stepped inside a stall belonging to the brown war horse and
leaned her hands on the partially-open stall gate. The horse nuzzled her
shoulder and she relaxed, then he turned away to munch oats from a hanging
bucket.
Sam raised his
weapon again. How could Alex see the blade heading toward him? Was there
anything more frightening than two warriors trying to kill the other?
