Luck was clearly not on Noah’s side
tonight. Of all the people he had to get stuck with in a deadly, magical
swampland, it had to be Trixie Black. They’d both gotten over the initial shock
of falling directly into a sloshy brown world covered in reeds, and, if Noah
had to guess, deadly water snakes of some sort. They were now trying to figure
out how to regroup with Raina, Thomas, and Chinonso.
Or, rather, Noah was
trying to regroup. Trixie, it seemed, couldn’t care less about finding their
lost companions. As a matter of fact, she seemed to positively glow upon
landing in the mucky swamp waters. She’d straightened, looked around, and
beamed at their surroundings, as if returning home after a long and exhausting
trip. She should live in a swamp, Noah thought wearily, it fits her
lovely personality.
They managed to pull
themselves out of the swamp onto semi-dry land and walked down a winding path
full of bendy, twisty marsh trees hanging with curtains of glistening, lime
green swamp moss. It was an eerily beautiful place, actually. It glowed in a
strange and somewhat off-putting way. The colors were a deeper shade of their
earthly counterparts, showy even in a dark swamp like this.
He might have been
able to appreciate it, if he weren’t so worried about where his companions had
gone to, and whether they were having to fight off hordes of Servi Mortis
sorcerers. Not Trixie, though. She was having the time of her life. The
stubble- headed annoyance persistently skipped ahead, like a child, and Noah
kept having to jog to keep up with her. She’d found a second-wind, it seemed
since they landed here, and had not broken down into one of her coughing fits
from the exertion. He was very tempted to push her back into the murky brown
waters just to slow her down.
Noah stopped for a
second, bending over to tie his shoe, when he realized he could not hear
Trixie’s feet squelching in quick skips along the mucky path. He stood, suddenly
on alert, and was immediately smacked wetly along the side of the head by one
of the twisty, moss covered swamp tree branches. He fell backward into a few
inches of swamp water.
She didn’t lose any
time in turning from him and running the opposite way. He struggled to pull
himself out of the gloopy muck that seemed to stick to him when he tried to
pull against it. He finally pulled free, and, despite the throbbing in the
right side of his face where she hit him, raced after her with all of his speed.
He ran so fast, his sloshy steps spraying muddy water up his back, that he
almost ran right into Trixie. She’d stopped dead in the middle of a wet field
sitting between two deep marsh ponds. He put the brakes on, but almost plowed
her over when the wet earth under his feet made him slide forward a few feet.
He grabbed her skinny arm, steadying himself.
“You evil little...”
Noah started, gripping her arm tightly.
But he stopped when
he realized her pale eyes were wide in panic. He followed her gaze and cursed.
Waiting in the marsh clearing twenty feet across from where Trixie stopped was
a tall redhead with a gleaming bionic hand. Martin. Not far behind him
were several Servi Mortis sorcerers, making their way toward them.
