My
Writing Process
Once
upon a time, I used to be a huge pantster. For those of you who aren’t familiar
with the term, it refers to a writer who doesn’t plan or outline—they literally
begin a novel with the vaguest plot idea or two and then write by the seat of
their pants.
The
spontaneous part of my personality loves how adventurous this can be. Sometimes
it feels like the book is writing itself, and you as the author can find yourself
as surprised by your plot’s twists and turns as your readers. However, it can
also be a very time-consuming and messy way to write. Halfway through, I would
realize I wanted to change huge plot points or my character arcs and that meant
most of what I’d written needed to be scrapped. I would get stuck in a cycle of
rewriting.
Over
time, I began to adapt my writing process. Now, I am a happy blend of a plotter
and pantser—a plantser. (OK, OK, I know these terms sound pretty silly. But
they are what they are.) I try to plan out most of the big plot details of a
book before I begin writing so I at least have half an idea of where it is
headed. It keeps me flexible to new inspiration that can change my plot
direction a bit as I go, and helps everything feel “fresh” and exciting as I
write—I still have the potential of surprising myself as I go—but it adds more
direction and purpose to my project.
As
for how I write, I occasionally write while listening to music (mostly
instrumental), but most of the time I prefer silence. Instead, I prefer to
listen to music during brainstorming sessions because I find it inspiring. I’ve
also found that I write best in chronological order (since I leave some
elements of the plot up in the air), so everything can develop naturally in my
mind. And, despite how adamantly some writers preach against it, I do some
light self-editing as I draft. It’s almost a compulsion. And hey, it works out
all right for me!
