Author Q&A

1.  What is the first book that made you cry?
Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I can't remember why, but I remember sobbing a lot. Also Charlotte's Web.
2. How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?
About 4-6 months, but I'm a plotter so I'm always one book ahead in my mind. I'd like to have longer to write, but then I might just obsess over details…
3. How do you select the names of your characters?
It's tricky. Sometimes a character's name is obvious from the start, other times I have to change them over and over until they feel right. Matthew in this book started out as Ralph, but then I watched 'A Discovery of Witches' and all of a sudden Matthew sounded like a very attractive name to me.
Other times there's an obvious link, like the Amberton Brothers in my Whitby Weddings series, Lancelot and Arthur.
4. What creature do you consider your "spirit animal" to be?
A hummingbird because I have a lot of nervous energy and I'm addicted to sugar.
5. What are your top 5 favorite movies?
Screwball comedies! His Girl Friday, The Philadelphia Story, It Happened One Night…
Also The Hunt for Red October and Moneyball because they're pretty much the only films my husband and I can watch together. We have very different tastes!
6. If you were the last person on Earth, what would you do?
Make a cup of tea. It's my answer for most occasions.
7. What fictional character would you want to be friends with in real life?
Elizabeth Bennet. Except I'd worry that she might not like me. How awful would that be?
8. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Don't overthink your story or you'll never get started. Think as you go along and then edit afterwards. Just get something down on paper. Also try and join a writers group - it's great for motivation!
