The Single Best Thing is set four years into the future from the end of
Singles, Set and Match (the fifth book in the Singles’ Series) and moves back
and forth through the events that have happened during that time.
This extract is the first flashback scene in the book:
1st September 2019
Eve had watched the letter burn until it was nothing but ash. She felt
as if she had finally laid down the load she’d been carrying on her shoulders
for the past two years and it felt good. Sitting in the damp garden, enjoying
the smell of the wet lawn and the summer flowers, she rolled her shoulders back
and forth feeling physically lighter.
The truth is finally out there!
And although she hadn’t told Melv himself, the Universe knew. She had admitted what she had done and now
she could move forward with her life.
She had to let go of Melv and Rosetta and their unborn child. None of that was any of her business any
longer. She knew she couldn’t cut Melv
out of her life completely because of their son Michael; he would forever be
the tie that bound them. But with Melv in Antigua and she and Michael and his
lovely little family in England there was hardly any reason for their paths
ever to cross in the future.
Heavy spots of rain started to fall again but she didn’t move. She let the summer shower work its magic,
washing over her and hopefully taking a little of her guilt and shame and
anguish with it. She stood under the
deluge until it began to ease and then drenched and dripping she stepped
inside. She dried off and slipped into
her pyjamas and finally climbed the stairs to her bedroom. But once again sleep evaded her. After half an hour of tossing and turning she
got up and made herself a herbal tea and took it back to bed.
