The Twisted Oak
by Sarah Hadley Brook

GENRE: LGBTQ Romance/MM Romance

Wade Dwyer's life is turned upside down when his father dies and he learns he must marry or he and
his siblings will lose the ranch. One last jab of the knife from his father.
On top of that, his father's only friend knows about the stipulation and is determined to own the
property by any means necessary.

He's facing the very real possibility of being the reason his family loses their home when his brother's
best friend, Lance Matthews, offers to walk down the aisle with him.
A faux marriage to the man he's loved for years is a torture he isn't sure he can endure.

Can he keep the ranch ... and the man of his dreams, too?

“This is nice,” Wade said as he moved closer to the pictures.
Lots of family photos, some of his graduation. It was like a timeline of Lance’s life.
When his eyes fell on one photo, he stopped, leaning in. It was a picture of Wade, Casey, and Lance
on the sofa, playing video games. Probably one of the many nights Lance spent there as a teenager.
But Lance wasn’t watching the game. He was staring at Wade.

“I remember that night,” Lance whispered, suddenly by Wade’s side.

“Brings back memories,” Wade admitted. “Who took the picture?”

Lance blushed. “Landon had been bugging us to let him join in on the video games,
so I handed him my phone and let him play something on there so he’d leave us alone.”

“Ahh, the little brother bribe. I know it well,” Wade said, grinning.

Lance laughed. “Well, he must have been bored, because when I got the phone back,
there were a lot of new pictures. He took some of his room, the barn, the horses,
and this one of us playing video games.”

Wade’s chest tightened. “You kept this one…why?”
There was nothing really remarkable about the picture. Other than Lance staring at him.
But that could have been anything. He could have said something funny or they could have been

Lance’s cheeks pinked. “I just liked the picture.”

He cocked his head and stood in front of Lance. “No reason?”

The man took a step back, and suddenly they were in the same position in which they’d found
themselves this morning in the hallway. Lance looked into his eyes and Wade’s heart did a somersault.
Lance’s eyes were dark with desire.

“Tell me,” Wade ordered. “Tell me why you kept the picture, Lance.
Why were you looking at me instead of the game? Were we talking?”

Lance shook his head. “No,” he breathed out, his voice shaky. “God, I remember like it was yesterday,
though. Casey and I were playing a game and you came in and joined us.
When you sat next to me…I couldn’t focus. I couldn’t even breathe.” He looked to the side.

Wade cupped his chin and tilted his head to face him. “Why? Tell me, Lance.”

Lance licked his lips. “Because I was crazy about you, Wade. And I was scared of my feelings.”

Author Q&A
1. What is the first book that made you cry?
The first book that I remember making me cry was Little Women, when Beth died. I was in elementary school and I couldn’t believe that she had passed away. I think it was also the first time I realized that sometimes the main characters that we adore, don’t make it to the end of the story.

2. What creature do you consider your "spirit animal" to be?
Lucy, from the Peanuts Gang! I know—she’s not an animal, but seriously, I’ve always felt like she was just misunderstood. She is grouchy, but fearless! I’ve been a lifelong Peanuts fan, but I feel a pull to Lucy. She’s in love with a musician that doesn’t seem to see the beauty in her, she’s smart and independent, and she’s sure she’s right—even when she’s wrong. I mean, that’s some serious confidence! She’s also what I would call “socially awkward” because she doesn’t care about what the social norms are—she’s going to say what she thinks no matter what. I can’t help but lover her.

3. What are your top 5 favorite movies?
It’s hard to narrow them down to just 5! But here they are, in no particular order:

·         Pillow Talk
·         Contact
·         When Harry Met Sally
·         While You Were Sleeping
·         White Christmas

4. If you were the last person on Earth, what would you do?
Well, first of all, I’d quit the diet! Then I’d probably spend a few months trying to confirm I was really alone on the planet. (I like proof!) Once I’d done that, I think I’d try to make sure all our scientific data, history, and art were preserved, just in case sometime down the road, aliens found our planet. You never know, right? Then I guess I’d live out my days somewhere nice.
As much as I sometimes pray for peace and quiet, I don’t think I’d make it too long completely alone, though.

5. Tell us 10 fun facts about yourself! :)
1.     I’m a huge Star Trek Voyager fan. Huge! Captain Janeway is my idol!!

2.     I have a sock obsession—I collect cute socks, ugly socks, and weird socks in a rainbow of colors!

3.     My pen name is a combination of both of my grandmother’s maiden names.

4.     I collect Madame Alexander dolls.
5.     When I have writer’s block, I bake. By bake, I mean bake! All day. Brownies, cookies, cakes… all day. My family and coworkers love when I show up with baked goodies, because I always make way too much.
6.     My favorite season is fall. I love when the leaves change colors and the air grows crisp.
7.     I write in a GLAD journal every day.
·         G = Something I’m grateful for.
·         L = Something I learned.
·         A = Something I achieved that day.
·         D = Something I delighted in.
8.     I love musicals. I try to see as many as possible.
9.     Snickerdoodles are my favorite cookies.
10.   I wake up at 5:30am almost every day. If I don’t, my whole day feels off.
