My Review
Notes to My Son is a collection of 25 "notes" that are 2-3 pages in length, all dedicated to a myriad of topics. Some of them include taking the high road and being kind, even in situations where a person might want to react angrily or with another negative emotion, refusing to let certain topics be considered taboo, and learning from your past (mistakes) to pave way for a better future. Each note offers wise words of wisdom and advice that anyone can take and apply to their own, everyday life. Whether you're a parent, a teenager looking to have an honest conversation with your parents, or just someone seeking some good advice, Notes to My Son is a worthwhile read.
I'm not a dad, but I am a mom to two boys, and I think a lot of these notes contain some amazing lessons to help guide kids (both sons and daughters) in a direction that will benefit them throughout life, should they choose to follow those lessons. And I believe parents can benefit from these lessons as well.
Growing up, I didn't have a father (he wasn't in my life due to his own personal choices), and my mother was a toxic narcissist (which I didn't discover until much later in life), so I didn't have anyone giving me advice or helping to guide me to become an independent, responsible, useful adult. It was a lot of trial and error on my own, learning what I could by seeing how others acted, spoke, etc. I always told myself I would be better when I became a parent. And I think, even with my stumbles along the way ('cause let's face it, parenting isn't easy sometimes), I'm on the right path when it comes to my kids. Having this book just gives me more motivation and more inspiration to continue down that path. I'll be taking the words I read in Notes to My Son, molding them in a way that works for me, personally, and using them to help both myself and my sons become the best people we can be.
Notes to My Son is an amazing book, and I'd highly recommend it to everyone.
