Q and A with Mark Wallace Maguire

If you could have dinner with any person living or dead who would it be? It would have to be C.S. Lewis. I am a huge fan of his fiction and non fiction and am a laymans Lewisian scholar. I also think I would enjoy dinner with him, not only out of my admiration for his brilliance, but also because he really took pleasure in eating and drinking and it sounds like it would be a truly good time and not just a ‘fanboymoment.

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on? Ive ventured on several. Ive been on the W.B. Yeats pilgrimage tour with my wife. We visited Sligo where we worshipped in the church where he is buried and where his grandfather was lector. We also visited many of the sites he wrote poetry about throughout the Sligo area and visited his tower, Thoor Ballylee south of Sligo. That was a grand time.

I also visited the homes of several American authors including Carl Sandburgs home, Connemara in Flat Rock, N.C., William Faulkners home, Rowan Oak in Oxford, Mississippi, Byron Herbert Reeces homestead in north Georgia and many, many more. Im also very fortunate that living throughout the South growing up, there are so many places that are named in Southern literature that you can visit a writers home or setting for a book without even meaning to such as Charleston with Pat Conroy or Macon, Georgia in relation to Ferrol Sams’s books.

I never tire of experiencing those types of events whether purposeful or not.

Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, are there any youd recommend? I love a good audiobook. (My first novel, Alexandria Rising, is actually coming out on audible this Spring.) I think the talent it takes to successfully narrate an audiobook is highly under rated. The one audiobook that has struck me the hardest is The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, narrated by Joe Morton. I had read the book when I was in college, but listening to the majesty and gravitas of Morton’s voice had me in tears at times.

Is there a sequel to, ‘In Pursuit of The Pale Prince? If not, what else are you working on? Yes, there is a sequel to ‘In Pursuit of The Pale Princeslated for publication in fall 2020. I am very excited about it. It has taken much longer than most of my other books, but I am pleased with the result. We are in the beta editing stages. I also have a prequel novella to The Alexandria Rising Chronicles I am close to finishing as well and another non fiction book on my experiences as the father of a child with special needs.

What advice do you have for writers of any age who are just starting? Dont stop. Dont give up. Practice. And above all, have fun. If you arent having fun, then just dont do it. Dont set out to write a novel. Set out to write and then let the book take over.

Please try not to spam posts with the same comments over and over again. Authors like seeing thoughtful comments about their books, not the same old, "I like the cover" or "sounds good" comments. While that is nice, putting some real thought and effort in is appreciated. Thank you.
