to complete the ultimate of death janitor duties.
Not only does Terra want to stay alive, but she hopes to complete
her training and discover her Spirit talents too. So, Frank, a Spirit of
Security, is assigned to protect her. Together, they undertake a secret
investigation of how to defeat Blanco. But with the future of Concord and
Terra’s very own life at stake, will they find the answer in time?

Chapter Two
The dark
solid earth they had been traveling on met with an airy sky-blue surface. Or
was it a surface at all? Blinking to focus her eyes, Terra felt sure when she
stepped forward, she’d plummet downward, falling through the sky without a parachute.
“Your mind is conditioned to expect a gaseous substance instead of solid.” Hermie stepped forward. His feet appeared to float in mid-air, yet he held so steady, it was clear he stood on solid ground. “It will take some getting used to. But rest assured, you will. It is quite safe.”
Terra frowned as she watched him pace back and forth for her benefit. Squatting, she felt around with her fingertips, surprised when the surface grated against her skin like asphalt. She flattened her palm against the cool dry ground and shook her head.
“This is so weird, Hermie.”
“You should have seen me the first time I felt wind against my face.” Hermie’s eyes twinkled at the memory. “I thought I was being attacked by a swarm of Airlights.”
Standing again, Terra bit her lip and studied Hermie’s feet one more time, taking confidence in his not plummeting away from her like a skydiver. Sucking in a deep breath, she eased a toe down in front of her. When she felt the solid surface she mumbled again, “Weird.” Then she, too, stepped forward, though much more tentatively than Hermie had. Her stomach swooped when she looked down. Gulping, she stood rigid on the sky-blue ground, afraid to move.
With two muddy colored fingers in his mouth, Hermie issued a shrill whistle. Another unusual creature approached from around the corner of a nearby building. The head of the animal resembled a horse with a long nose, pointed ears, and large eyes. Terra recognized intelligence in his expressive face. A beautiful black mane cascaded down his powerful reddish-brown neck. His broad, flat back stood around waist high. A cropped tail waved lazily. His legs were the biggest surprise. All four bent away from his body, reminding her of spider legs. She jumped slightly when he spoke. She knew horses to be intelligent animals but hearing words from the horse-like mouth came as a surprise. “Ah, if it isn’t Hermie, my favorite Introguide, and a new Spirit. She looks familiar. Have we met?”
