Book Description:
Are you one of the millions who reside within a secret life, a life which
constantly feels out of your own control: Are you plagued by repetitive
thoughts and/or actions which interfere with your daily activities? The
author lived for more than 40 years with an undiagnosed form of mental
illness, a phobia now known as OCD: obsessive-compulsive disorder. His
emotional pain and suffering were at times almost unmanageable. In his
mid-sixties, the author, a loving husband, father and accomplished high
school teacher and athletic coach, discovered a unique psychologist
within the Denver therapeutic community who utilizes a radical but
highly successful treatment that's allowed the author to control his OCD
symptoms almost 100%. "A Secret Life" is one of the few books written
by an OCD sufferer and descries in detail the pain and chaos living with
this illness can cause not just the victim, but those closest to him.
This story doesn't stop there, but provides readers with options and
advice dealing with OCD from someone who broke the curse of living a
secret life. Now he's ready to share his story in order to help others.
Author Interview
Why do you think people want to hear from an OCD sufferer?
Estimates vary as to how many people suffer from some form of
OCD in the United States today. There may be three to five million people who suffer
from OCD in the United States. This number includes a significant number of
children and adolescents. Dealing with OCD can be debilitating and extremely
harmful. Statistics show a significant number of people suffering from mental
illness attempt and/or commit suicide every year. I have always believed I had
a moral responsibility to share my story of living with OCD, because my life
reflects a positive side to the OCD phenomenon. As a teacher I know my students
related well to real stories I told rather than to lectures or reading from a
textbook. Individuals naturally respond more favorably to information with
which they can relate.
Do you have a hobby or hobbies?
My primary free time activity is reading, especially
biographies of famous historical figures or historical non-fiction. I
thoroughly enjoy gardening which I inherited from my father and his father. I
love working in the dirt. And I love creating bouquets of flowers from my
garden for my LOL, three daughters and other special ladies. I like to make
birdhouses and other garden ornaments.
Do you snack while you write?
I do not eat while writing. I do not like any distractions
and prefer complete quiet. I hide myself somewhere quiet within our house and
usually work for several hours, early in the morning, before taking a break.
What was your children’s specific reactions to your book?
Who has been inspirational to you in your writing career?
The two most important women in my life have been most
inspirational to me in deciding to write the book. My mother Bette and my wife
Betsy are the two finest individuals I have ever known. Both Mom and Betsy
devoted their lives to others and inspired me to write a book for OCD
sufferers. Both my mother and without question, Betsy, have been the most
influential supporters in my life's struggle to overcome OCD.
