1.
What is your favorite genre to read?I read a lot within my own genre, contemporary
romance, but I also love an epic historical novel and, to truly escape, I will
read crime thrillers. Michael Connelly, Nicci French, and Kathy Reichs are all
fave authors!
2.
What would you consider to be your Kryptonite as
an author?
There always comes a point while I am writing the first
draft―usually close to the end―when I think the book is rubbish. Self-doubt,
imposter syndrome―whatever it is, it happens every time. I get over it, but I
will have to leave the writing for a few days and come back to it fresh.
3.
What is your most unusual writing quirk?
I can write pretty much anywhere. Once I am in my head and
the characters are ‘living and breathing’ up there, I could be in the middle of
a noisy café, or on a beach, or sitting in the living room while my partner
plays video games, and I am so absorbed that the noise isn’t a problem.
For editing, however, I need silence or the sound of the
ocean or rain, which I will play on a loop on Spotify.
4.
If you could tell your younger writing self
anything, what would it be?
That travel fiction is a legitimate genre. When I first
started writing seriously, my (former) agent had great difficulty selling my first
book. At that time, travel fiction was just getting a foothold, and I got a lot
of ‘No’s because my book ‘read like a travel biography’. I am glad I stuck with
it, but I had a lot of doubt about writing in that genre when I was starting
out.
5.
How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?If I am writing regularly―I work full time, but
when I am in writing mode, I will write 1-3 hours a day―it will take around
three months. When I was on sabbatical in 2018, I wrote That night in Paris
in four weeks, but that was writing fulltime. And editing will take another few
weeks.
6.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?Read widely, seek feedback, be an active and
genuine member of the writing community, hone your query letter and synopsis
until they are the best things you have ever written, and never, ever, ever,
ever give up.
7.
What is the first book that made you cry?The Thorn Birds. I read it for the first time when I was 12 or
13 and I read it about five more times after that. It is a brilliant piece of
fiction and it imprinted on me in a way that has impacted my personal and
author life. I genuinely believe that when two people love each other they
should move heaven and earth to be together. #hopefulromantic
8.
Have you ever met anyone famous?
I met Hugh Jackman when he was at drama school and I was
studying on the same campus. The first time I saw him onstage, he was in full
age makeup and within seconds, his performance had me reaching for the program
so I could learn his name. He was commanding, brilliant, and incredibly sexy―even
dressed as a sixty-year-old. I turned to my friend and whispered, ‘He’s going
to be wildly famous.’ In real life, he was―and apparently still is―a really
nice guy―charming, genuine and, yes, super sexy―like super.
9.
What are your top 5 movies?
Because I write romcoms, I am going to give you my top 5 in
that genre.
1.
When Harry Met Sally―hands down the most perfect
romcom ever made
2.
French Kiss―hilarious and so romantic
3.
The Proposal―oh, my god―that scene where they
bump into each other!
4.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days―a silly premise,
but kind of brilliant, especially the performances
5.
Overboard (the original with Goldie Hawn and
Kurt Russell)―always makes me laugh out loud and always makes me cry at the end
