Author Interview
1. What is the first book that made you cry?Which John Steinbeck novel did I read first? Hmm… The Red Pony, perhaps.
2. How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?It seems to be getting shorter each time… six months, maybe.
3. How do you select the names of your characters?I do Google searches for the correct ethnicity and time period of my book and make a long list, then narrow it down and pick out the main character names that I like the best. I Want them to be unique to some extent, but not too difficult to pronounce. Except in Heart of Sherwood, where all but a few of the characters already existed in history or literature.
4. What creature do you consider your "spirit animal" to be?A dragon.
5. What are your top 5 favorite movies? The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Star Wars Series, The Harry Potter Series, The Jurassic Park Series, Titanic (the James Cameron version) and it is really hard to pick only 5!
6. If you were the last person on Earth, what would you do?Enjoy the peace and quiet 😊
7. What fictional character would you want to be friends with in real life?Yoda. I could learn a lot from Yoda.
8. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Two serious things – edit, edit, edit, hire an editor if necessary. And don’t give up. You write what’s in your heart, and that is something an author is compelled to do. Take classes, online courses, get a mentor, whatever you need to hone your skills, but don’t give up because you get a bad review or someone criticizes your work. Maybe you’ll never be able to give up your day job, but you have a message and you have a voice. That story needs to be told because somewhere out there is a person who needs to hear it. Do what it takes to build your confidence, and then let your light shine.
9. What book do you wish you had written? The Grapes of Wrath. Who wouldn’t want Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes?
10. Tell us 10 fun facts about yourself! :)1) I play the French horn 2)I used to barrel race on my appaloosa 3) I dyed my hair for years because I started turning gray at 30 4) when I taught school I could beat all the teenage boys in my classes at arm-wrestling (except a few of the football players) 5) I marched in the drum corps The Cadets in 1980 6) I raised Australian Shepherds 7) I have dyslexia and still get left and right mixed up 8) I enjoy big family vacations that we get together for every several years 9) when in college I once went to the top of the World Trade Center and called my mother to say, “Guess where I am?”; she didn’t even know I had left Mississippi. 10) I’m a green belt in Karate
11. If you could live in any time period, what would it be and why? While I would love to visit a myriad of time periods in the past (being a historian and all), I think the time period I would choose is now. Women have more rights than ever before and I’m not getting lynched for being gay. Today ordinary people have more freedom to live their lives and there are exciting new discoveries happening every day. I feel we are on the verge of something monumental and I want to be in on it.
12. What is your favorite genre to read?
No, can’t pick just one. I like fantasy, historical, romance, mysteries, and adventure. Therefore, I threw all of those genres together and came up with the Night Flyer Trilogy!

Please try not to spam posts with the same comments over and over again. Authors like seeing thoughtful comments about their books, not the same old, "I like the cover" or "sounds good" comments. While that is nice, putting some real thought and effort in is appreciated. Thank you.
