In Ziratakian folklore, the tale of the Temple of the Monarch has been

This is a brand new saga, and a new generation. There is no need to read

Excerpt
“Zon?”“Zon?”“Zon?”“Zon?”
Zon cracked his
eyes open and dragged in a deep breath laced with a briny scent. His entire
body felt drenched in perspiration.“Zon?”“Zon?”
“What!” he
snapped at the appeal.
“What just happened?”
JOH asked in a hollow voice.
Realizing the
inquisitive orb was still clutched in his palm, Zon released him while trying
to survey their overcast surroundings.
“You’re asking me? You’re supposed to know everything.”
“Well, yes,
generally I do know everything, but this time–”
It didn’t sit
well that the animated droid was at a loss for words.
Sprawled atop a
muddy surface, Zon gathered his legs and teetered into an awkward stance. It
was awkward because the ground was spongy, and his head was still spinning. A
quick glance around revealed a dreary environment with sodden trees, their
amber-colored bows hanging low under the weight of drenched, heart-shaped
leaves.
Attempting a
step, Zon’s boot sunk into the muck. His hand lurched out for balance and
latched onto a leaf the size of a small child. His grip slipped off the viscous
surface.
There was not
much delineation between ground and sky. Hazy air. Clammy dirt.
,JOH circled
around him, taking a tentative sweep of the immediate area, his black eyes
slanted in determination. When he stopped to hover before Zon, his shiny
surface was dotted with moisture and his expression, pensive.
“An exoplanet.
Unnamed, but I can identify the galaxy. The Bellmor galaxy. It’s not the
location that concerns me, though. We can’t stay here, Zon. The atmosphere is
loaded with methane.”
To keep track of
how far they had travelled, Zon searched for his footprints. They formed a
trail of hollow indentations now filled with water and debris. No, not debris.
Bending over for closer inspection, he discovered it was actually hundreds of
phosphorescent specks whirling through the puddles.
The spot where he
had landed was still marked by three deep holes, indentations from his butt and
hands. Just behind those grooves stood a moss-covered rock wall.
The slime churned
and roiled in a circular pattern–just like the cave wall back home had done
before he was sucked through it.
“JOH!” He pointed
towards the vortex.
JOH zoomed
towards it and Zon saw the siphon tug on the shiny blue sphere.
“Hurry, Zon!” The
tinny voice cried. “We have to hope this takes us back–or–somewhere safer than
here.”
Zon tried to run
but the muddy surface hindered him. Plodding forward, he felt the haul of the
vacuum, the fabric of his vest sticking out with the force.
JOH bobbled with
effort to stay in place until Zon could reach him, and together they
surrendered to the pull.
About the Author
USA TODAY bestselling author, Maureen A. Miller worked in the software
industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat
and safety glasses hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines.
The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those
lengthy airport layovers became writing.
Maureen's first novel, WIDOW'S TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination
in Romantic Suspense. After that she became hooked to the genre. In fact,
she was so hooked she is the founder of the JUST ROMANTIC SUSPENSE
website.
Recently, Maureen branched out into the Young Adult Science Fiction market
with the popular BEYOND Series. To her it was still Romantic Suspense...just
on another planet!
