A Carlisle Deputies Novel
When Deputy Nick Senaster chastises a bunch of college kids at a bar, he doesn’t think anything of it, even if their leader is gorgeous. The guy is too young and way too cocky, and soon Nick has an emergency foster placement to focus on. His first job is ensuring ten-year-old Ethan knows someone cares for him. But Nick doesn’t realize Ethan is a package deal.
When Alexander finds out his abusive stepfather, Dieter, has lost custody of his half brother, he’s torn between relief and dread. Alexander can’t get custody until he can provide a home for his tiny family. In the meantime, at least Ethan’s foster father will let Alexander visit.
So of course the man turns out to be the cute but dour cop who gave Alexander a hard time.
Soon Nick and Alexander discover they misjudged each other. Nick is more than an authoritarian automaton, and Alexander has a drive and a maturity that belie their first meeting. But between a campaign of intimidation from Dieter, their own insecurities, and the logistics of dating with Ethan’s fragile sense of stability hanging in the balance, they have their work cut out for them if they want to build a future.

It had been one hell of a day. He stayed at work well after the judge had left so he could catch up on his work. Alexander checked the time, sent the last of what he needed to get done, and closed the laptop. He locked the office and left the building through the back exit, passing security and wishing them a good night.
The night air was a little cool, so he walked quickly, checking his phone for the address as well as the time. He was supposed to see Ethan at seven, and he had five minutes to get there. He rang the bell spot on time and waited for the door to open. “You…,” he said before he could stop himself as he recognized the cop from the night before.
“If it isn’t Mr. Know-It-All,” the cop said and stepped back. “You may as well come in. Ethan is at the kitchen table with a few cookies and a glass of milk.”
Alexander hurried inside. “You know he’s diabetic, right? He shouldn’t be eating sugary stuff. It sends his blood sugar all wacky.”
“I know. It’s something he and I have in common,” the cop said. “By the way, I’m Nick.”
“Alexander.” They shook hands, and Alexander did his best not to look the tall, strikingly broad and masculine sheriff’s deputy over too closely. He didn’t want to piss off Ethan’s caregiver.
“Come on in,” he said and motioned through to the sparse living room.
Alexander followed him through the house until he came into the kitchen. Ethan looked up from the table and raced over to hug Alexander as though his life depended on it.
“I knew you’d come. I told the man that you’d be coming to take me home.” Ethan turned away to scowl at Nick, who either didn’t see it or pretended he hadn’t.
“I’m only here for a visit, Ethan. Nick here is going to take good care of you.”
“But… you’re a lawyer, top of your class. They have to listen to you. Tell the judge you work for to let me come home with you,” Ethan said and broke down into tears as Alexander held him tightly.
“It doesn’t work that way. But I’m going to come visit you as often as I can, and once I’m able, I’ll ask the court to grant me custody, and then you can come live with me permanently.” Alexander wanted that more than anything.
“Why don’t you finish your snack, and then you and your brother can go out in the backyard if you want,” Nick offered.
Ethan seemed reluctant, but he climbed back onto the chair. Nick tilted his head toward the back room, then left, and Alexander followed. “Is what you told him true? Are you going to fight for him?”
“Will you fight me on it?” Alexander asked, and Nick put up his hands.
“Chill out, dude,” Nick said. “I’m not going to fight anyone. I was asked to look after your brother, and I will. I’ll stand up for him in any way I can, and I will fight him being returned to anyone who isn’t good for him, but if you are willing to give him a good home and stay with him, then you’ll get no argument from me.” He stepped closer, and a warm, rich, masculine scent wound around Alexander. He had to push its attraction out of his mind. “I was only doing my job last night, and you can be angry with me or think whatever you want of me, but I only want what’s best for him.”
