BLURB:

What begins as a prank ends in murder.

The campaign for the U.S. Congressional seat was referred to in the press as “Mr. Smith goes to Washington versus the carpetbagger.” The popular local candidate gets the majority of endorsements, but his opponent’s wealthy, out-of-state family is willing to do whatever it takes for him to win.

Penny-wise Investigations, a discount detective agency located in a mall, is hired to find out who is stealing the local candidate’s political signs. Two of their investigators, Cameron Chandler and Yuri Webster, not only catch the thieves in the act, they find a body next to a pile of stolen signs, proving that Campaigning Can Be Deadly.

EXCERPT

The hardest thing about any political campaign is how to win

without proving that you are unworthy of winning. - Adlai Stevenson

Billed by the press as “the carpetbagger versus Mr. Smith goes to Washington,”

the contest between the two opposing candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives demonstrated

the power of money in a campaign.

With huge resources behind him, the “carpetbagger” became a household name overnight by

bombarding the urban Washington State district with ads and flyers attacking his opponent.

“Mr. Smith,” on the other hand, already a well-known local politician who had won most of the

endorsements, tried to ignore the smear campaign from his opponent by consistently focusing on policy.

As the election drew near and polls suggested the race was too close to call, the candidate who had

tried so hard to remain above the fray came out with an ad aimed at discrediting his opponent for

moving into the district to run for office. Immediately the press jumped on the change in tactics.

They tarred both candidates with the same brush and labeled the race as one of the most negative

ever run in the state. It made good headlines.

Author Interview

1. What would you consider to be your Kryptonite as an author?
My dislike of marketing. I have to force myself to spend time each day working on getting my name/books out there. Some writers I know seem to have unlocked the secret to marketing with their first book. I’m on number four and still struggling to gutsy myself up to ask readers to write reviews and to sign up for my very occasional update or the newsletter I have yet to write.

2. If you could tell your younger writing self, anything, what would it be?
I didn’t tell most people I was writing because I wasn’t having any luck interesting publishers in my mysteries. I felt like a failure. Fortunately, my husband kept encouraging me. But I wish I had reached out to others. Writing may be a solo activity, but even if you aren’t a joiner, interacting with other aspiring writers can be helpful in so many way – from commiseration to writing tips to learning about marketing. How I wish I had started attending Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America meetings years ago.

3. Favorite childhood memory involving books?
When I was in the 6th grade I was caught by the “library police” reading “adult” books and was banished from the library unless accompanied by an adult. What happened was this: The children’s library was in the basement, but I discovered a back stairway and was able to slip upstairs when the librarian wasn’t looking. I’d already read all of the books I was interested in downstairs and was delighted to find a section of adventure books in the adult library. I especially loved stories by Jack London. I never took any books home, but I spent too much time reading in far corners of the adult library. Getting caught was inevitable. Thus ending my life of crime.

4. If you could dine with any literary character, who would it be and why?
I have so many favorites, but for the most part, I like to keep characters confined to their book homes. I like viewing them from the outside, creating my own image of what they look like, how they sound, and who they are. That said, I would want the dining experience to be pure fun, not for enlightenment about anything in particular. Therefore, I extend my invitation to Isabel “Izzy” Spellman from The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz. Love her kooky, energetic and flawed approach to life.

5. If you could own any animal as a pet, what would it be?
My favorite domestic animal is my fantasy cat, Macavity. He’s featured in Why Me? Chimeras, Conundrums and Dead Goldfish which is the first in the Macavity and Me mystery series. (Number two is in draft form.) I’m allergic to cats, so I created my ideal pet for this series. I’ve spent so much time “with” him at this point, that sometimes I expect to look up from my computer and see him sitting there looking back at me.

6. Have you ever met anyone famous?
I have a picture of me standing next to Bill Clinton. Okay, so Bill was actually a life-size cardboard cutout. But I was real.
