Author Q&A
2. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what
would it be?
Definitely start sooner. Ignore the discouraging feedback from a
tutor on a writing course. Believe in myself.
3. Favorite childhood memory involving books?
I really don’t remember childhood books, although I know my
mother read to me every night. For some reason I know I liked a book about a
bear!
4. If you could dine with any literary character, who would it be
and why?
Lisbeth Salander - the girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She’s
fascinating! I’ve studied psychology and would love to try to work out what
makes her tick.
5. Did you want to be an author when you grew up?
It wasn’t something I ever considered for a second. I had a very
disjointed education because of illness and frequent house moves. Because of
this I left school without any qualification (or ambition)
6. If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would
they be?
Energetic, friendly, continual learner (oops, that’s four words!)
7. What’s one movie you like recommending to others?
Priscilla Queen of the Desert, it’s got great music and it’s fun.
8. If you could own any animal as a pet, what would it be?
Cat
9. Have you ever met anyone famous?
No, but I’ve seen several including Elton John and Eddie Izzard,
10.
How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?
It
varies, but I’d say at least six months. I envy writers who turn out books much
more quickly.
11.
How do you select the names of your characters?
As
the Lily Baker series is set in WW2 England I look at date appropriate names. I
also take care that characters don’t have names with the same first letter or
those that sound a bit the same, eg Joan and Jean. It’s important also to have
names that fit the nationality of the person. From the second Lily Baker book
there is a Welsh character called Bronwyn. It’s a very Welsh name.
12.
What are your top 5 favorite movies?
•
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (it’s very funny!)
•
Ghostbusters
•
Muriel’s wedding
•
O, Brother, where art thou?
Gosh,
no heavy duty films in my list. I seem to remember the films that made me
smile.
Grieve.
Look for other people in the hope I’m not last!
14. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Write
every day
Get constructive feedback from someone you trust
15.
What book do you wish you had written?

Please try not to spam posts with the same comments over and over again. Authors like seeing thoughtful comments about their books, not the same old, "I like the cover" or "sounds good" comments. While that is nice, putting some real thought and effort in is appreciated. Thank you.
