Author Interview

1.      Did you want to be an author when you grew up?
As a child and youth, I wanted to be a great number of things when I grew up—a veterinarian (doesn’t every little girl?), band director/professional musician, the person who creates models for museums, and, yes, an author. I realized many of my dreams as a mother and teacher, and I even contemplated being a truck driver eons ago (and here I am driving across America); but the common thread that has run through my life from age six to the present is writing. It is very exciting to be living that dream now.

 2.      If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Smart. Fearless. Kind.

3.      If you could own any animal as a pet, what would it be?
That is a tough question because I love every kind of animal and had many of them on my farm. But I think it would be really cool to have a koala as a pet. They are sweet, furry, cute, and don’t seem like they would be much trouble.

4.      Have you ever met anyone famous?
I suppose that depends on who you consider to be famous. At concerts I attended, I have met Christian music singers Steven Curtis Chapman and Sandi Patty, and international entertainers Bianca del Rio and Shane Gilberto Jenek, AKA Courtney Act.

 5.      What fantastical fictional world would you want to live in (if any) given the chance?
There are a myriad of wonderful worlds I would love to explore! But if I could only choose one, it would have to be Middle Earth, the land of Tolkien. Rivendale is so beautiful, the shire so peaceful. My intellect would revel in learning anything Gandalf would teach me, and I would canter my steed with the Riders of Rohan anytime. Besides, elves are just too cool!

 6.      Favorite childhood memory involving books?
My mother was an avid reader, and I was a little slow at reading because of my dyslexia. So every summer, and often on Saturdays during the school year, we would lie in my parents’ king size bed and my mother would read books to me, children’s books in my earlier years, all the way up through the classics. I think she enjoyed it even more than I did, but it was a great way to spend time together.

 7.      What would you consider to be your Kryptonite as an author?
Spelling. I can reasonably blame the dyslexia for being a poor speller, but people always found it humorous that I was a schoolteacher—and then a writer—who can’t spell.

8.      If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to take a chance and don’t give up so easily.

 9.      If you could dine with any literary character, who would it be and why?
Robert Langdon, from the Dan Brown novels. We could have interesting conversations about art and history, legends and codes, and all of his adventures, and enjoy a fabulous meal in Rome or Paris. Then again, I would want a security detail to make sure some international villain didn’t start chasing us before dessert!

 10.  If you were the last person on Earth, what would you do?
Enjoy the peace and quiet.
