After the government’s brutal attack on the Diseased Ones, Hollis Timewire must wade through the carnage of her treacherous mistake. The survivors want justice, and now Hollis faces impending execution. Each day, she must prove herself to be a model community member. But chopping firewood for the new camp in the forest isn’t enough. Hollis longs to redeem herself, and this sparks an idea to rescue the little boy from the Testing Center. Stealing the government’s secret weapon might just be the perfect way to destabilize the system – enough to bring the whole thing crumbling down. But unseen forces are at work. The world is not what it appears to be, and society has a dark secret that not even Hollis is prepared to face.

My Review
The Unseen Ones is the sequel to The Diseased Ones, and this one picks up immediately after where book one ends. Hollis and the other Diseased Ones are suffering the aftermath of Hollis's terrible decision. The government has bombed their underground facility, and now they're in hiding in the forest. Hollis wants to try and make things right, but the Council wants to execute her. Only one person decides to take a chance on her and give her the opportunity to prove herself. She's given 30 days to do so, with the help of Jonah. Given menial jobs around the new camp isn't what Hollis had in mind, though. She comes up with a plan to do something dangerous and a little crazy, but will her plan cause even more problems for the Diseased Ones?
This book is full of action. It's got a lot going on, and I think Hollis has a nice little character arc. She's trying to undo her awful indoctrination that led her to make the bad decision she made in book one. But no one, save for Jonah, wants her around. The others are angry. They're suffering. And Hollis is top of the list for who to blame for their misery. But even with all the anger and hatred directed towards her, Hollis doesn't give up. She's determined to prove she's a better person than they think she is. That she can redeem herself and soften the pain of everything that happened before.
I really enjoyed this sequel, and I'm curious to see where these characters might go next.
4.5 stars.
