Author Q&A
1.
What would you consider to be your Kryptonite as
an author?
2.
If you could tell your younger writing self
anything, what would it be?
Hmmm…I
think maybe “pace yourself” because I’ve faced burnout before, but I think
mostly I’d just say “don’t be afraid to take creative risks.”
3. Favorite childhood
memory involving books?
I used to spend a lot
of time in the summers in our sunporch on an old sofa, reading. It was heaven.
4. Did you want to be
an author when you grew up?
I did! I was always
writing poems and little stories, and I did my degree in English Lit and
figured I’d write a book someday. That got put to the wayside as I entered the
workforce and got married and started a family, but after our youngest was born
I launched in and never looked back.
5. If you had to
describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Stubborn, driven, and
soft-hearted.
6. If you could own
any animal as a pet, what would it be?
I’m a dog AND a cat
person for different reasons. I’d say…just own a pet and love it. Loving
something is never a mistake.
7. Have you ever met
anyone famous?
Define famous? I met Elizabeth Gilbert last year and that was a pretty
big thing for me. I adore her.
8. How long, on
average, does it take you to write a book?
It depends on the book. A book like The
Heiress’s Pregnancy Surprise generally takes 4-6 weeks, but a longer book with
multiple plot lines etc. takes me anywhere from 3-6 months.
9. How do you select
the names of your characters?
So this is kind of funny, really. Names generally
give me a really hard time, but one trick is to watch movie credits and jot
down ones that I like!
10. What creature do
you consider your "spirit animal" to be?
As I am not indigenous, this
isn’t something I can really claim for myself.
11. Tell us 10 fun
facts about yourself!
I work in a
chocolate shop part time
I nearly failed
math; my first “real world” job was in accounting.
If I hadn’t done my
degree in English, it would have been in music
I’m the baby of the
family and it’s true, we are spoiled. 😉
My favourite TV show
is Masterpiece.
After M&B
released my first book, I went to London for the AMBA luncheon – my first time
overseas and traveling by myself.
I once did a
recording for a CD
If I were to go back
to school, it would be in psychology (I have a minor in it)
My sister is married
to my husband’s brother.
And the most
embarrassing but funny when I look back on it moment: In my second year of
university, I won our house “Diaper” award because I once laughed so much I
peed my pants. (No, alcohol was not involved, lol)
12. If you could
live in any time period, what would it be and why?
Is it weird to say
Edwardian because I love the clothes?
13. What is your
favorite genre to read?
Historical fiction,
oddly enough. I love romance but I’ve got a real soft spot for escaping into
the past. Current fave authors include Kate Quinn and Jennifer Robson, and I
just read one of Pamela Bell’s Emmerdale titles that was delightful.
Author
Bio –
While bestselling author Donna Alward was busy
studying Austen, Eliot and Shakespeare, she was also losing herself in the
breathtaking stories created by romance novelists like LaVyrle Spencer and
Judith McNaught. Several years after completing her degree she decided to
write a romance of her own and it was true love! Five years and ten manuscripts
later she sold her first book and launched a new career. While her heartwarming
stories of love, hope, and homecoming have been translated into several
languages, hit bestseller lists and won awards, her very favorite thing is when
she hears from happy readers.
Donna lives on Canada’s east coast. When she’s not
writing she enjoys reading (of course!), knitting, gardening, cooking…and is a
Masterpiece Theater addict. You can visit her on the web at www.DonnaAlward.com and
