 My Review
When the Sun Met the Moon is a cute children's book that tells the story of how the sun and the moon came together.
Sun is tired and alone. He needs to find someone who can help him shine on for years to come, so he takes a vacation, plunging Earth into darkness. But soon, he finds the one who can help him stay strong and continue to share his brightness and warmth with others.
I thought this was a unique story with a good message for both kids and adults. It's okay to ask for help. Doing everything alone and trying to keep going day after day with no help can cause serious burn-out (which, for the Sun, would be very bad indeed). But with the support and love of another (friends, family, etc), things do get a little easier and better. Always ask for help when you need it. That's the message I took away from this book.
The illustrations are beautiful and will thrill young readers. And while the story itself may be a bit too "mature" for some younger readers, it can easily be explained by an older reader (older sibling, parent, teacher, etc).
I'm giving When the Sun Met the Moon 4.5 stars!

Retelling The Original Love Story: How the Sun Met the Moon

Even before the tale of Adam and Eve, came the love story of the Sun and the Moon. For eons, millenniums, centuries, and decades, every living being on Earth has depended on the partnership of the Sun and the Moon. One covers a day, one covers a night. The endless folktales and fables, documentaries, and books revolving around these beautiful keepers of the sky that give us life with their light are infinite, and honoring them through art and song is one of the best ways we can bring glory to their everlasting support.

A beautiful way of looking at the origins of the Sun and the Moon and how they formed their partnership to look after our skies, seas, people, and animals of the Earth is by seeing their bond as one of the truest forms of undying love. I decided to tell my version of how they met by taking us back to the beginning of time itself, where the Sun was so tired of lighting up the sky without a break that he needed to go and find a partner who could share the responsibility with him. Enter the Moon (in my original story, she was named 'Luna'), who with her light, can help the Sun with his duties to brighten up Earth.

There are many versions of how the Sun may have met the Moon, but in the one, I choose to believe and tell, the two planet powerhouses come together for a common purpose and love each other through it all, the ups and downs, the distance, the highs and lows and the many obstacles that have come their way. Their commitment to each other and their promises to the Earth is unfaltering. I also feel like this is a great moral for children to pick up on particularly where romantic love is concerned, so their expectations can be set from a young age on what they should expect from a partner, using the neutral and natural protagonists of the Sun and the Moon. Who - as a great bonus - are the only characters you ever need to look up at the sky to do a meet and greet with at any time, date, or place.
