How can children begin to heal after losing a pet? Balloons for Tiger takes
an imaginative look at this tough topic as colorful balloons travel from the
hands of children to their beloved cat who has passed on. This book lets
children open up their hearts and imaginations for a magical journey to the
farthest corners of the world, where they'll meet skydivers, astronauts,
superheroes, and everything in between. As they watch the balloons voyage to
the other side of the rainbow bridge, they learn to positively process their
grief. Balloons for Tiger is a great tool for any child who has experienced
the loss of a pet- or any other loved one, too.
My Review Balloons for Tiger is an adorable children's book that tackles the subject of losing a beloved pet. It's a unique, creative story that provides comfort for children who may be grieving after their pet crosses the Rainbow Bridge. Having children follow the balloons released in the story on their adventure as they make their way to Tiger is a heartwarming and magical way for children to process their emotions and heal from the sadness they may be feeling. I found the illustrations to be bright and colorful. They were delightful and really made the story pop. As someone who lost a beloved cat four years ago, this book made me smile. It's a quick, easy read for young readers, and parents will appreciate the imaginative support and reassurance the book provides. 5 stars!
Author Interview 1.How can kids better cope with pet loss
after reading “Balloons for Tiger”?
Instead of going into depth about religion and spirituality (which may be
out of the comfort zones of many adults), parents, caregivers and teachers can use
this imaginative and whimsical book to remind kids not to dwell on their loss.
Instead, the book helps show kids that their pets are forever in their hearts,
and that their pets love them, too.
2.How can parents use this book in larger
conversations about loss?
“Balloons
for Tiger” is a good “starter book” about loss. The book shows the
“rainbow bridge” and depicts it as a warm, bright place where pets are having
fun. I think this illustration will bring comfort to kids so they know their
pets are not alone. At the end of this book, there is an educator guide written
by a teacher and discussion question prompts for parents, developed by a
licensed social worker. My hope is that “Balloons for Tiger” serves as a tool
for helping kids cope with the loss of a pet, or any other loved one.
3.Tell me a little about Tiger, the star of
the book.
Tiger was a black tabby cat who lived to be
18. My husband, Brian, adopted her from The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago
when she was just four. She was a part of both of my daughters’ lives. She
lived for wet food, loud meows and long, intense cuddle sessions. She was also
always the winner at playing hide-and-seek. Once, it took us two days to locate
her inside the box spring of our mattress. We were so lucky to have her in our
lives.
4.What do your children think of this book?
My children love this book because after we
released balloons for Tiger, they kept asking where the balloons went. That
forced me to think on my feet and make up beautiful stories about their journey
to the rainbow bridge. Many of the places that the balloons traveled to were
stories made up by my girls. It was their suggestion to include the cow that
jumped over the moon.
5.I see you are donating a portion of
proceeds from the book to the Anti-Cruelty Society. Is there a particular
reason why you selected that organization?
My husband rescued Tiger from The
Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago when she was four. We also rescued our
11-year-old orange tabby cat, Hoosier, from there, as well as our 10-year-old
Beagle, Drake. The Anti-Cruelty Society has brought joy into our lives and we
wanted to give back to the organization.
Meet the Author:
Lori Orlinsky is a multi-award-winning children's book author who
lives in Chicago. She was inspired to tell this story after her family
experienced the loss of their beloved eighteen-year-old cat, Tiger. Unable to
find books about pet loss to help her young kids cope with their grief, Lori
wrote Balloons for Tiger. She hopes this book will help others,
too.
