My Review
Does Grandma Remember Me? is a wonderful children's book that will help young readers understand a little more about dementia. It's a lovely little story that showcases a young girl realizing her grandma is different and seems to have days where she struggles, and her way of trying to cope with the change. She remembers how her grandma used to be, and she uses those memories to be more compassionate and understanding.
I really connected to this book, even as an adult, because my grandma (who passed away 14 years ago) started struggling with memory loss months before she passed away (from pneumonia). There were days where she didn't even know who she was talking to or where she was, and it made me sad to see someone who had always been so vibrant and full of life suffering in such a way. And while I was in my early twenties when she passed, it was still hard to deal with. I can't imagine being a young child who doesn't understand why their grandparent is different all of a sudden. But with this book, I do think it will make it easier for parents to have a conversation with their young readers about dementia and the changes it can cause in a loved one.
The illustrations were lovely, and they really brought the story to life. The story itself is easy to read, and it makes understanding such a difficult subject easier for younger readers.
I would recommend to this all parents of young readers.
5 stars!
