Excerpt
Rand gripped her wrist and swung her
behind him so fast she fell on her back on the grass.
With a loud pop, the first shot jolted his
body. Blood spread over his shirt at the shoulder. The second shot spun him
backward. He crashed face first on top of her, clutching his gut, his face
grimacing in agony.
A third bullet shattered a window of her car.
With a cacophony of screeching tires, the
truck took off.
In the ominous silence that followed,
Lyssa lay sobbing, in shock, under Rand’s dead weight. Something wet and sticky
flowed over her left hand, which was pinned under him.
“Rand, talk to me.” No response. God, tell me what to do.
Phone. Tote bag. Can’t reach.
Rand’s phone. Jacket pocket. She pressed
911.
“My friend’s been shot,” she sobbed at the
operator.
“Location?”
She blurted out the address. “Please, he
can’t be dead,” she choked out.
