Book Description:
Need a laugh to get through your workday? You've come to the right place.
Ambrose Bierce's classic The Devil's Dictionary took on life in general. Now
a century later, it's time to lampoon the business world. There's no richer
target than being told to think outside the box by leaders spouting off
about synergy, teamwork, and innovation while at the same time exhorting you
to stay in your swim lane. If as famed business guru Peter Drucker writes,
"Culture eats strategy for breakfast," then we've been asked to eat a dog's
breakfast at work for far too long! A little truth in every joke. Join the
fun as the two lead authors and 50 other contributors offer their humorous
take on how the workplace really operates. With almost 600 diabolical
definitions to enjoy, you're sure to find plenty to smile about.

Humor, and a Little Revenge on Tone-Deaf Bosses
My latest book, Blah, Blah, Blah: A Snarky Guide to Office Lingo had a
definite “eureka” creation moment of inspiration. Two guests in a row, on back
to back weeks on my podcast “Dan Hill’s EQ Spotlight” on the New Books Network,
the world’s largest book review platform, mentioned to me almost casually as if
in passing that the estimate is that 25% of all office managers are bullies.
Wow. That’s stunning. Especially when you consider that millions of dollars get
poured into supposedly improving corporate cultures. How can you lift the
culture if you’ve got the cancer of bad, bully bosses infiltrating your ranks
and making matters worse for your employees?
Soon after the 2nd of these references to bully bosses being so
prevalent I woke up early one morning and vowed to do something about it. But
what, exactly? Then I thought of one of my favorite books, The Devil’s
Dictionary by Mark Twain’s contemporary Ambrose Bierce. That book is
considered one of the 100 greatest works of American literature, with
diabolical definitions like BORE: Somebody who talks when you want them to
listen. So, I thought: why not use humor to score some points about how things
could be better than they so often are on the job?
Throw in going back to watch episodes of The Office tv show, and movies
like 9 to 5 and The Devil Wears Prada and I was on it. But since
I knew I couldn’t speak to everyone’s perspective, I quickly decided I would
crowdsource the book and invite definitions from men and women from all
different professionals and stages of their careers from across America,
Canada, Europe and beyond.
Besides dispensing humor, do bosses get a “talking to”? I hope so, thanks to
entries like the following among others. There’s MEANDERTHAL: A boss, usually
of the older and heavier male variety, known to pontificate endlessly. There’s
DISTRACTIONS: How an overly ambitious boss views an employee’s beloved family.
And finally, VACATION (or holiday): A beautiful setting where one goes with
loved ones to reduce one’s daily workload to only three to four hours a day.
