Author Interview

1. What would you consider to be your Kryptonite as an author?

Getting out the truth. Fighting for people’s justice––getting out the important message; never allow anyone ever to abuse you.

2. Favorite childhood memory involving books?

Horseback riding. Then I played the Native American character. I enjoyed my cartoons or books about Native Americans, because I love and adore their culture and spirituality there is between, wolf, horse, spirits and themself.

3. Did you want to be an author when you grew up?

Mostly, I wanted to be a professional horseback rider or a swimmer. However, I have always written lots of notes. Mainly, because I didn’t want to forget anything about my life. I think since I was a juvenile; I desired to write an autobiography. It never came to fruition, but in 2016, I had the courage to grab my pen and paper.

 4. If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Animal lover, loyal, passionate.

5. If you could own any animal as a pet, what would it be?
Horses, dogs, elephants, wolfs, and a black Panther.

6. Have you ever met anyone famous?
Yes, several, but I hardly talk about it because I don’t like namedropping.

7. What is the first book that made you cry?

Mio, My Mio, (Mio, My Son) a 1954 children's book by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren

8. How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?

I don’t know! It might depend on the narrative and the author. It took me four years to write the first book, and beforehand I’d already spent two years in researching many things about the antagonist.

9. How do you select the names of your characters?

Good question. Choosing names was a grand puzzle. I had many options to begin with. Along with the storyline, I changed the name of the antagonist several times, until I found the perfect name-match for his character. The name of the protagonist I knew immediately. The rest of the characters’ names came along with the story writing.

10. What creature do you consider your "spirit animal" to be?
The dog, wolf, and the horse.

12. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Important question where I can only answer on what I’ve experienced. Be aware of all the bogus promises from the self-publishing companies. They only want your money and not what’s best for you. Stay away from the many Instagrammers who offer paid reviews to represent you on Amazon. As a writer, you can easily fall into those traps. Don’t! It can damage you.

About the Author

M. L. Stark has been married for over 20 years and has adult children and grandchildren. She based certain elements of the story on real-life events. When Stark was middle-aged, she underwent a divorce and met a new man who mentally abused her. These experiences and her survival have empowered her to write stories about surviving cruelty and abuse.

"I am telling the story not of what I thought I was meant to be born into, but as the survivor I have become after abuse. I am also hoping to connect with people and deter them from facing a toxic relationship in their lives by sharing my own real-life events." Stark says.

M. L. Stark dares to discuss what it is like to be in an abusive relationship, and shows the power in embracing the experience, prevailing and ultimately recovering from the abuse, escaping the psychopath and helping others tap into their empathy and prevail over similar hazards.
