Author Q&A
Hi, my name is Hana Sheik, the Harlequin
Romance author of Second Chance to Wear His Ring. I’m here today to
answer some burning questions.
1.
When did you write your
first book?
It took me 6
years to finish my first book, and when it finally happened, I completed
a novel in a short 29 days! The fast drafting took me by surprise given I never
thought I’d ever be able to hit ‘The End’ on a manuscript ever.
2.
How long, on average,
does it take you to write a book?
Depends on the
book and how busy I am drafting it. The quickest I’ve completed a book is 17 days
and it clocked in at around 51,000 words (NaNoWriMo 2017). The longest projects
seem to be when I hit the revising stage. Revisions can be tediously slow for
me because it takes me time to polish a book. First drafts write much faster
for me.
3.
What’s a typical writing
day like for you?
I’m currently in
school full time, so nothing is typical of my schedule at the moment. I do try
and squeeze in my morning words early. Lately though, I’ve been writing in the
evenings as I dedicate mornings and afternoons to schoolwork.
4.
Do you listen to music
when writing?
I do! I listen to
instrumental music mostly. Very rarely do I listen to music that’s catchy. I
can’t belt out tunes and write at the same time. That would be some superpower,
lol! :D
5.
What are your top 5
favorite movies?
I was just making
a list of my top 5 on Twitter, but I’ll spice it up with some newer movies. My Top
5 fav movies as of right now are: Two Weeks Notice, Northanger Abbey
(!!!), Pride & Prejudice (the Kiera Knightly version), Year One,
and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997). I could name more,
but I’ll refrain.
6.
If you were the last
person on Earth, what would you do?
Live in a library
finally!
7.
If you could travel
anywhere in the world to write, where would you go?
Right now, I’m
living for Turkey, so I’d go there. Anywhere in Turkey would be fantastic.
Istanbul, Marmaris, Antalya, Cappadocia. I want to see it all!
8.
What fictional character
would you want to be friends with in real life?
Brody from The
Siren and the Deep Blue Sea by Kerrelyn Sparks. I’m a fan of her books, and
Brody is one of her heroes from her Embraced by Magic series. He’s a
shapeshifter! We could have so much fun together!
9.
How do you choose your
book covers?
For my Harlequin
Romance/Mills & Boon True Love debut, Second Chance to Wear His Ring,
I didn’t choose my cover technically. I filled out an art sheet to help direct
the art team with vital information about the characters, settings, synopsis,
and pivotal scenes, and then they worked their cover-making magic. I’m lucky
the cover turned out to be wonderful!
10. If you could live in any time period, what would it be and why?
Regency England!
I know that my perception is skewed by the historical romances and dramas I
read, but I want to have a season and I want to be a spinster, and I want a
dashing gothic hero to sweep me away to his crumbling estate and have his way
with me…or maybe I have my way with him, who knows? đŸ˜‰ I’ll happily settle with a rakish
duke or a grumpy laird, thank you.
11. What book do you wish you had written?
The Selection series by Kiera Cass. I love her books! She writes such snuggly
romances.
12. What’s one thing you’d like to say to your readers?
I often say Second
Chance to Wear His Ring is the book of my heart because I poured everything
I’ve ever wanted to see in a book on its pages—and I had to cut out a whole lot
to save for other stories. For that reason, I truly hope my readers love the
story and characters and setting as much I loved every minute writing all of
it.

Please try not to spam posts with the same comments over and over again. Authors like seeing thoughtful comments about their books, not the same old, "I like the cover" or "sounds good" comments. While that is nice, putting some real thought and effort in is appreciated. Thank you.
