My Review
The Boy Who Breathed Underwater is a fun children's book with a good message behind it.
The story is about a little boy who wishes he could have a special power. He's visited by a genie who decides to give him one week to try out different powers to see which one he might like to have most. So the boy tests out super strength, speed, invisibility, telekinesis, and even breathing underwater. What he discovers at the end of the week, though, is that having a power isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I thought this was a cute, easy-to-read book with a fun rhyming scheme and delightful illustrations. And the message within shows kids that it's okay to just be yourself. You don't need to change yourself to be special. Just be you.
A very enjoyable book for kids.
5 stars!
Izzy Rees was born in West London, but has spent the last thirty years living in Derby. Ten years ago, when her three girls were young, she began work on a series of rhyming picture books, created in snatched moments, and initially written on small scraps of paper or whatever was available. She always intended to revisit them, and Covid and lockdown presented the opportunity; unable to continue her work as a neurophysiotherapist, working with vulnerable patients, she decided it was now or never! She has written six books so far in the ‘The Boy Who’ series, The Boy Who Breathed Underwater being the first one. The others will be published in the near future.
