Wellington Thorneycroft is content picking pockets, taking Ambrosia, screwing prostitutes, and simply surviving in the hellish, walled City. But everything changes when he spots a spectral woman who wordlessly conveys the message: We’ll escape together. Suddenly, Thorneycroft’s life is turned upside down as he’s pulled along a circuitous path to an unknowable freedom: a path marked by violence, sex, and metaphysical dread.
Reviews:
"The Sun Casts No Shadow by Mark Richardson is a dark and
twisted tale of a city's underbelly...A fascinating yarn that will captivate
readers, The Sun Casts No Shadow easily earns five
stars. Richardson has produced an exceptional work that readers will relish
and avidly share for years to come."―Portland Book Review
The Sun Casts No Shadow is a dystopian story that comes across as a bit bleak, mainly because the main character is a bit depressing. But, to be fair, he lives in a crappy world, in a crappy city, and life doesn't seem to be all that worthwhile. Which is why Wellington Thorneycroft (yes, that's his name, and it is pretty great) likes to pick pockets, use ambrosia (ugh, now I want some dessert), and have random sexual encounters with prostitutes. But his life is about to change when he meets the eye of a strange woman who seemingly can help Wellington escape the hellishly dark and gloomy nightmare that is the city he lives in. But should he trust her? Can he trust her? Or is he doomed to suffer through a never-ending mundane life filled with no hope whatsoever?
I thought this book was a little slow to start. Took me a little bit to get into it, but once it got going, it became much more engaging and unique. I usually try to give slower books a chance, but sometimes I'm ready to call it quits within the first 10-15 pages. Thankfully, I didn't do that with The Sun Casts NO Shadow, and I'm so glad I kept reading. There's a slight fantasy element to this one, and there are some intriguing and strange characters scattered throughout.
The world they live in definitely has a very hopeless vibe to it, but things aren't all bad. There are definite moments of optimism that do shine through, but they are few and far between.
I liked Wellington, and I thought he was a well-written character. He's morally ambiguous (at least I viewed him that way), but to be fair, no one in the story is really good or bad. They're all just trying to live whatever life they can make for themselves in this depressing world they're stuck in. If Ambrosia and prostitutes make you happy, who are we to judge?
A dark and gritty story that does get a bit heavy at times, I found The Sun Casts No Shadow to be an overall really good read once it got going. If you're a fan of dystopian fiction with some twists, and if you can stick with it through the beginning, you'll find that this book is a gem.
4 stars!
