Former SNL writer and comedic rising star Julio Torres takes readers on a journey through the lives and intimate dramas of some of the unsung shapes of our time in this picture book inspired by his HBO special My Favorite Shapes.
Shapes. You’ve heard of them. You might have even interacted with a few. But do you really know them? From plucky Plunger, who wishes to defy his shape and become a beautiful vase, to other household objects with dreams of a life beyond their predestined roles, I Want to Be a Vase takes readers on an essential and visually stunning journey through the lives and intimate dramas of often-overlooked household appliances.

“I’m deeply jealous of all the children who get to read this book. This is
my villainous origin.”

MY REVIEW
**I'd like to thank the author/publisher/Rockstar Book Tours for the copy of this book to read and review. Much appreciated.**
I Want to Be a Vase is an interesting children's picture book about a toilet plunger who doesn't like his "job" and wants to be a vase instead. Sounds strange, I know, but to be fair, vases have flowers and look pretty/smell good. Plungers not so much. So it's understandable. However, Vacuum Cleaner doesn't approve of Plunger becoming a vase. Vacuum insists that Plunger needs to stick with his "job" and not try to be anything else. But Plunger refuses to be bullied and eventually finds some flowers to tape to his handle. Now he's a vase. And happy. Very, very happy. And because Plunger has finally become the thing he's always wanted, regardless of Vacuum's protests, the other household items decide to become something else, too.
It's definitely a unique book with a message, but I do feel parents should talk to their kids (especially younger ones) about a couple of the illustrations. On one page, it looks like a toaster has books in it. I would recommend making sure kids know not to put their books in a toaster, regardless of whether their toaster wants to be a bookshelf or not. Probably not a good (or safe) idea. But other than that, the book is a fun, silly read with a good message. Let kids know they can be anything they want. They can do anything they put their minds to. But also, it's a book that is pro-LGBTQ+ and will resonate with readers of all ages.
I really liked this one, and I would say it's a book children will definitely have fun reading.
4.5 stars!
