Excerpt
There was something magical about seeing someone fully absorbed in the world of a book. She could tell he had no idea she
was standing at the end of the row. His eyes were zeroed in on the words on the
page. Nothing else existed for him. Since it was closing, she was compelled to
disturb him. Even though she wasn’t eager to break the spell for him, she did want to clear up and go
home.
She walked toward him, wondering how close she’d have to get for him to notice her. As it turned out, she had to rest
her fingertips lightly on his shoulder to pull him from his trance. It was just
a little touch, but he felt warm and firm. He startled and looked up.
“Oh! Sorry. I didnae notice you there. Good book!” He stuck his finger between the pages, so he wouldn’t lose his place.
“Ready to check out? I’d be happy to let you read, but we’re closing in ten minutes.”
His eyes widened. “I guess I got sucked into this thing. Yes, please. I promise tae take good care of it. I wouldnae want to be responsible for
ruining a librarian’s perfect return record!”
Paige smirked.
“What’s that for?” James gestured toward her face. “There’s a story there. I can see it.”
Her smirk widened into a grin. “Should I tell you a little librarian secret?”
“You have tae now. You cannae say something like that and then back away from it.”
“Good point. Come on, I’ll tell you while we walk back to my desk.”
James stood up and followed close enough that Paige could feel the heat from his arm next to hers, even though they didn’t touch.
“Right. We’re walking. What’s the story, Paige?”
She leaned in so he’d catch her whisper. If it also meant that her upper arm pressed into
his a little, so be it.
“Librarians never turn their books in on time because we don’t have late fees.”
