Book Description:
The magical sisters are enrolled in an etiquette class when their manners
are not fit for the king and queen of the enchanted land of Harmony. Can
Elizabeth the Emu help the royal sisters?
In the beautiful and peaceful land of Harmony, three magical sisters, the
Bobos Babes, uproot the kingdom's tranquility with some not-so-polite
actions -nose-picking, belching, and other noisy...expulsions. Their
parents, the King and Queen, enroll the sisters in the elegant Elizabeth the
Emu's etiquette class where they learn manners and other ways to
self-improve like being on time, politeness, and proper personal hygiene.
Elizabeth the Emu explains to Angel Scarlet, Princess Daphne, and Fairy Cora
that having proper etiquette is more than good manners, it's about being
kind and courteous. And for the sisters? Well, let's just say that they will
be needing more than one lesson from Elizabeth the Emu's etiquette
class.
My Review
The Elegant Emu is a book in the Adventures in Harmony series featuring Angel Scarlet, Princess Daphne, and Fairy Cora.
In this story, the three girls are sent to a special school run by Elizabeth the Emu. Elizabeth is an elegant emu who teaches etiquette and manners. The girls are sent to the school because their parents think they need to learn how to be on time, how to be polite, and how not to do gross things at the dinner table (like burp or pick their nose).
But the sisters aren't exactly the best at becoming "proper, polite young ladies" and give Elizabeth a run for her money.
I thought this was a cute story, although I did think the overall message was a little outdated. I get that these little girls are considered royalty in the story (their parents are King and Queen), and royalty is held to higher standards, but I'm of the mindset that bodily functions are normal and can't always ben helped, even at the dinner table. Sure, they should learn the proper way to excuse themselves if something does happen (like a burp or passing gas), but I do feel like girls are shamed more often than boys when it comes to things like that. However, I do think having proper table manners like hand washing, chewing with your mouth closed, and not stabbing your food with a knife is important, so I think that will resonate with younger readers.
This is definitely a very cute story, and I thought the ending was so sweet. Elizabeth did have a tough day, but once she goes home, her husband dotes on her, which was a nice touch.
Overall, The Elegant Emu is a delightful little story with good lessons and lovely illustrations that will appeal to young readers, especially girls.
