from Chapter 2 of The Lost Laird from Her Past:
‘Blast,’ she mumbled, trying to push herself up and away
from the man who was definitely not Arthur for a better look at him. Had she
been kidnapped?
‘Best save your energy for something other than curses,
Brenna.’
She stilled. She knew that voice. Even in a wave of
confusion, his voice anchored her, as it always had. But it couldn’t be, could
it? He was dead. She fumbled her way through the wool covering her. Finally it
gave way, and a strip of moonlight revealed the rugged, familiar shadowy
profile of a man, a man she had once loved. She sucked in a breath. Gripping
the horse’s mane, she turned closer to him for a better look. Everyone had
believed him dead, including her, but here he was. Alive.
‘Garrick?’ she asked, still uncertain if her injuries and
confusion filled her vision with delusions and memories of the past.
‘Aye,’ he answered. ‘Glad to see you awake. Who is Arthur?
And why were you travelling without your father’s men? You could have been
killed.’
‘You are not dead.’
He met her gaze. ‘Nay,’ he answered. His words were flat,
lifeless things floating in the air.
‘Am I dead?’ she asked. It sounded more logical than being
here in his arms after so much time had passed without a single word. After
long believing him dead. After grieving him for months and forcing herself to
move on and let go of her hopes and dreams of their life together.
‘You are alive, as am I.’
